India Poised to Surpass One Billion Internet Users by Fiscal Year End, Driven by Unprecedented BharatNet Infrastructure Expansion
India is on track to achieve a landmark digital milestone, with projections indicating the nation will surpass one billion internet users by the conclusion of the current fiscal year. This forecast, articulated by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, underscores a transformative phase in India's digital evolution. The acceleration is primarily fueled by the BharatNet initiative, described by the Minister as the world's most extensive rural and remote connectivity investment. The program's first phase has successfully connected approximately 214,000 gram panchayats, establishing critical digital infrastructure. The subsequent phase aims to integrate an additional 264,000 panchayats, significantly expanding the network's reach. To ensure operational sustainability, a centralized network operating hub will be established for maintenance and oversight. This strategic infrastructure push is a pivotal component in bridging the digital divide, fostering inclusive economic participation, and positioning India as a dominant force in the global digital landscape. The scale and pace of this connectivity drive represent a formidable governmental commitment to digital inclusion as a cornerstone of national development.
