Sensex surges over 1,300 points

Benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, reversed early losses to extend their winning streak for the fifth consecutive session, closing in positive territory on Thursday. The Sensex gained 809.53 points, or 1%, ending at 81,765.86, after oscillating between 82,317.74 and 80,467.37 throughout the day.

The Nifty50 closed at 24,708.40, up by 240.95 points or 0.98%. It reached an intraday high of 24,857.75, with the day’s low at 24,295.55.

Of the 50 stocks on the Nifty50, 41 ended higher, with notable gains from Trent, TCS, Infosys, Titan Company, and Dr. Reddy’s Labs, which rose by up to 3.31%. On the flip side, 9 Nifty50 constituents, including SBI Life, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Life, NTPC, and Grasim, saw losses of up to 1.21%.

The broader markets followed suit, with the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices gaining 0.57% and 0.83%, respectively.

IT stocks led the rally, with the Nifty IT index rising 1.95%, driven by TCS, Infosys, and LTIMindtree. The index reached a fresh 52-week high of 45,027.95 during the day.

Other sectoral indices ended on a positive note, with the exception of the Nifty PSU Bank and Realty indices.

Global Cues

In global markets, Wall Street’s major indices surged to record highs, driven by tech stocks and positive remarks from Federal Reserve officials. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to 6,086, the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.3% to 19,735, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7% to 45,014.

MSCI’s global stock index increased by 0.47%.

US Treasury yields fell after Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that the strength of the US economy would allow the central bank to “be a little more cautious” with interest rate policy.

In Asia, MSCI’s broadest index of stocks outside Japan slipped 0.15%, with most Asian markets, except South Korea, closing higher.

In Europe, stocks gained about 0.4%, while the euro traded near a two-year low ahead of the no-confidence vote in France.

Indian benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 climbed at open on Tuesday, amid mixed global cues.

At about 9:45 am, the Sensex was up 820.40 points or 1.06 per cent at 78,159.41, and the Nifty was up 251.90 points or 1.07 per cent at 23,705.70.

After Monday’s market crash, the Nifty and Sensex were down 11 per cent and 12 per cent from their record highs. Foreign investors offloaded nearly Rs 1,400 crore in the cash markets in yesterday’s trade.

The broader market found its grip and outperformed the headline indices with gains of 1.2 and 1.5 per cent, respectively. Despite shedding 11 per cent from their peaks, both indices still boast a robust 17 per cent year-to-date gain, far outpacing the Nifty’s 9 per cent rise.

All sectoral indices traded in the green territory. The top performers were Nifty Energy, Realty, IT, and Auto. Gains in NTPC, Reliance, ONGC, and Power Grid lifted market sentiment. Realty companies like DLF and Brigade traded higher. Auto stocks like M&M, Tata Motors, and Bajaj Auto lifted the index nearly 2 per cent higher.

Global Cues

Markets in the Asia-Pacific region were higher on Tuesday, tracking Wall Street gains, even as investors parsed discussions from Chinese financial policymakers’ at an investment summit in Hong Kong.

Mainland China’s CSI300 was 0.4 per cent higher, while the Shanghai Composite was trading ahead by 0.2 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was trading higher by 0.61 per cent.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was ahead by 1.02 per cent, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.37 per cent, while the Topix rose 0.65 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi and Kosdaq traded around the flatline.

The benchmark S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished higher, with energy, communication services, and consumer discretionary stocks driving gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was dragged down by materials stocks.

The Dow fell 0.13 per cent to 43,389.60, the S&P 500 rose 0.39 per cent to 5,892.62 and the Nasdaq rose 0.60 per cent to 18,791.81.

European stocks finished lower, weighed down by real estate and utilities stocks. The STOXX 600 index closed down 0.06 per cent. MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 2.99 points, or 0.35 per cent, to 845.60.

At opening bell, the BSE Sensex was up 126 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 80,208, while the Nifty 50 was at 24,465, higher by 29.80 points, or 0.12 per cent.

Global Cues

Meanwhile, markets in the Asia-Pacific region were mixed on Thursday morning after the overnight decline in US stocks on on Wall Street.

South Korea’s Kospi was down 0.37 per cent after the country’s third-quarter GDP growth came in at 0.1 per cent quarter on quarter, missing Reuters’ estimates of 0.5 per cent growth, and following a 0.2 per cent decline in the second quarter.

The small-cap Kosdaq declined 1.08 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.48 per cent, while the Topix was up marginally.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.14 per cent.

On Wall Street, all the three main indices finished lower, driven by losses in consumer discretionary, technology and communication services stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.96 per cent to 42,514.95, the S&P 500 fell 0.92 per cent to 5,797.42 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.60 per cent to 18,276.65.
