Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to United States Vice President Kamala Harris. “… Under the Biden administration, India and the US have deepened cooperation on issues of global importance. Our shared commitment to democratic values will continue to guide our friendship…” Rahul Gandhi wrote in his letter to Harris.

“I would like to congratulate you on your spirited presidential campaign. Your unifying message of hope will continue to inspire many’, the letter read, adding “As the Vice President, your (Kamala Harris) determination to bring people together, and find common ground will be remembered”.

“I wish you the very best on you future endeavours”, the letter concluded.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in her first press briefing since Tuesday’s election blamed the ‘global headwinds’ for Democrats’ loss in the US Presidential elections 2024.

Pierre said that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have accepted the US Election results, and one cannot re-write history.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris accepted the choice that the country has made. We cannot re-write history and we have to remember what happened in 2022. When we came out of the 2022 mid-terms, we saw successful mid-terms for any new administration from over 60 years. It was because of President’s policies… those were popular with the American people,” she said.

The 2024 presidential election is over, but the path to Inauguration Day on January 20 is just beginning. The votes have to be certified in the states, the Electoral College has to meet and then Congress counts the vote.

President-elect Donald Trump has won enough electoral votes to claim the presidency, even though not every state has finished counting its ballots.

In addition to Trump’s decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris, Republicans also took back the US Senate, building a solid majority in that chamber that confirms federal judicial nominations.

States have to finish their ballot counts and formally certify the winner of their popular vote by December 11. The new Congress will meet on January 3, 2025. It will accept each state’s certified results of the presidential election on January 6, formally paving the way for Trump’s inauguration.

Donald Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. That is the day he will formally become president again.

Did Congress distribute ‘blank’ copies of Constitution at Rahul Gandhi's event? BJP takes jibe https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/did-congress-distribute-blank-copies-of-constitution-at-rahul-gandhis-event-bjp-takes-jibe/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/did-congress-distribute-blank-copies-of-constitution-at-rahul-gandhis-event-bjp-takes-jibe/?noamp=mobile#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2024 12:07:13 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/did-congress-distribute-blank-copies-of-constitution-at-rahul-gandhis-event-bjp-takes-jibe/

With Maharashtra gearing up for the assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged that the Congress party distributed blank copies of the Constitution at an event led by Rahul Gandhi in Nagpur, reported India Today.

According to details, the event’s theme in Nagpur was protecting and upholding the Constitution.

The Maharashtra BJP even posted a video on social media showing the books with the ‘Constitution of India’ written on the front. However, they contained only blank pages except for the preamble on the first page. The video has gone viral on social media.

“Congress wants to erase the Constitution of India like this. All laws written by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar are to be deleted. That is why Rahul Gandhi had predicted that reservation would be cancelled in the interim.

“Remember, respected Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and his constitution is not an election issue but the foundation of life of India and Indians. So the people will teach a lesson to the anti-constitutional Congress,” the Maharashtra BJP tweeted.

Fadnavis hits out at Rahul Gandhi:

Apart from the blank pages row, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hit out at Rahul Gandhi for holding a ‘red book’, which he suggested indicated an inclination towards ‘urban Naxals and anarchists’.

“My allegations made two days back against Rahul Gandhi have proved true about his inclination towards ‘urban Naxals’. He showed the red book and tried seeking help (politically) from urban Naxals and anarchists,” India Today quoted Fadnavis as saying.

“Rahul Gandhi indulges in such drama regularly. He, on a daily basis, insults the Constitution in some or other way,” he added.

Congress replies:

The Maharashtra Congress hit back at the BJP accusing the party of peddling a false narrative. Congress said that the saffron party wants to do away with the Constitution.

“The whole of India knows that BJP and RSS are the enemies of the real constitution, no matter how much they try to spread a false narrative by putting the cover of the Constitution on a blank book,” it said in a post on X.

“BJP’s strategy is to end the Constitution by making false accusations against those who saved the Constitution. But under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the Constitution-loving people of the country will never allow this cunning plan of BJP to succeed,” the party added.

Earlier on Wednesday, at the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan in Nagpur, Rahul Gandhi held a slim copy of the Constitution with a red cover and slammed the BJP and RSS for attacking the Constitution and thereby attacking the ‘voice of the country’.

He even repeated his call for a nationwide caste census and said that the exercise would take place after his party ‘will break the wall of 50 per cent’ reservation limit.

Rahul Gandhi slammed over his remark on British's ties with ‘pliant maharajas, nawabs’; Scindia royal family reacts https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/rahul-gandhi-slammed-over-his-remark-on-britishs-ties-with-pliant-maharajas-nawabs-scindia-royal-family-reacts/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/rahul-gandhi-slammed-over-his-remark-on-britishs-ties-with-pliant-maharajas-nawabs-scindia-royal-family-reacts/?noamp=mobile#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2024 08:55:41 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/07/rahul-gandhi-slammed-over-his-remark-on-britishs-ties-with-pliant-maharajas-nawabs-scindia-royal-family-reacts/

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders from royal families, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Diya Kumari, have criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent remark on British East India Company’s ties with Maharajas and Nawabs.

“The East India Company choked India by partnering with, bribing, and threatening our more pliant maharajas and nawabs,” read a column in The Indian Express by Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.

The mention of Maharajas and Nawabs didn’t sit well with BJP leaders with a royal lineage. Criticising the remark, Minister of Communications for India, Jyotiraditya Scindia, asked Rahul Gandhi to “stop insulting Bharat Mata and learn about true Indian heroes like Mahadji Scindia, Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit, Kittur Chennamma, and Rani Velu Nachiyar”.

While sharing the screenshot of the article on X, Jyotiraditya Scindia took a jibe at Gandhi and wrote, “Those who sell hatred have no right to lecture on Indian pride and history.”

“India’s legacy doesn’t begin or end with the title ‘Gandhi’. Only under PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s leadership are the stories of our real warriors finally celebrated. Respect Bharat’s history, or don’t pretend to speak for her,” he added while mentioning Rahul Gandhi as a “product of an outdated entitlement.”

‘Baseless allegations made on basis of half-baked interpretation’: Kumari Diya

Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari condemned Rahul Gandhi’s comments and claimed that his remarks were an attempt to “malign the erstwhile royal families of India”.

She also said that the dream of integrated India was the result of “utmost sacrifice of the erstwhile royal families of India”.

“I strongly condemn Mr Rahul Gandhi’s attempt to malign the erstwhile royal families of India in an editorial today. The dream of integrated India was only possible because of the utmost sacrifice of the erstwhile royal families of India. Baseless allegations made on the basis of half-baked interpretation of historical facts is completely unacceptable,” Diya Kumari wrote in a post on X.

Jyotiraditya Scindia on his family’s alleged betrayal to Rani Laxmi Bai during the Revolt of 1857

Jyotiraditya Scindia comes from a family of Scindia rulers who were part of the Maratha dynasty that ruled the erstwhile Gwalior state (now in Madhya Pradesh) during 18th century.

Reacting to allegations, Jyotiraditya Scindia told The Lallantop, “Jayajirao Scindia helped Rani of Jhansi till the end. The British had asked to use the army. But Jayajirao refused. The British had put him under house arrest. He was put in jail.”

‘Bored of him’: Rahul Gandhi refrains from criticising PM Modi in Wayanad while campaigning for sister Priyanka https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/03/bored-of-him-rahul-gandhi-refrains-from-criticising-pm-modi-in-wayanad-while-campaigning-for-sister-priyanka/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/03/bored-of-him-rahul-gandhi-refrains-from-criticising-pm-modi-in-wayanad-while-campaigning-for-sister-priyanka/?noamp=mobile#respond Sun, 03 Nov 2024 17:00:37 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/03/bored-of-him-rahul-gandhi-refrains-from-criticising-pm-modi-in-wayanad-while-campaigning-for-sister-priyanka/

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi avoided mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting on Sunday and dubbed it a ‘boring’ topic. The assertion came while he campaigned with Priyanka Gandhi in Wayanad for the upcoming bypolls. Meanwhile his sister lambasted the PM for ‘favoring big business interests over the well-being of the people’.

“In this meeting, I have a choice in front of me to either give a political message or a speech I would give to my family members. I would rather speak to you like I speak to my family. I would like to give a speech more about the candidate herself. And, anyway, she has already mentioned Mr. Modi and we all bored of him…then why mention him twice?” Rahul Gandhi asked during the meeting.

Rahul Gandhi had won the Lok Sabha polls from both Wayanad and Raebareli earlier this year. A by-election was necessitated after he opted to retain the family bastion of Raebareli. Voting in Wayanad will be held on November 13.

My sister has always been a campaigner. She never stood for election. That should tell you something about her character, Gandhi told the crowd on Sunday.

Sharing their nostalgic memories of childhood when they competed with each other using the cameras gifted by their father (late Rajiv Gandhi) for capturing the best photograph, he said, “I still don’t remember who won the competition.. ok.. she (Priyanka ) is now saying that I won.”

He said Priyanka had travelled a long distance from the little girl taking the photographs.

“She understands that the beauty is that everyone has millions and millions of labels, every single person is unique, everything is unique – someone might see weakness, she’ll see strength – that is my sister,” the Leader of Opposition said.

Rahul Gandhi also said that Priyanka can do more roles than him.

The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency consists of seven Assembly segments– Mananthavady (ST), Sulthan Bathery (ST) and Kalpetta in Wayanad district, Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district and Eranad, Nilambur, and Wandoor in Malappuram district.

Rahul Gandhi ‘upset’ over ‘favouritism’ in Congress candidates' selection for Maharashtra polls: Report https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/26/rahul-gandhi-upset-over-favouritism-in-congress-candidates-selection-for-maharashtra-polls-report/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/26/rahul-gandhi-upset-over-favouritism-in-congress-candidates-selection-for-maharashtra-polls-report/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 26 Oct 2024 04:57:46 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/26/rahul-gandhi-upset-over-favouritism-in-congress-candidates-selection-for-maharashtra-polls-report/

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, has reportedly expressed his disappointment over the alleged ‘favouritism’ in the suggested list of Congress leaders for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, scheduled on November 20.

Of the 85 seats that the Congress is contesting, the party has released the names of 48 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls. Rahul Gandhi highlighted that the list of candidate names submitted in the Congress Election Committee (CEC) meeting appeared to “favour” certain Maharashtra Congress leaders, India Today reported some sources as saying.

Rahul Gandhi also questioned about the allocation of certain Congress strongholds to Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in areas such as Vidarbha and Mumbai as part of the seat-sharing agreement of the Maha Vikas Aghadi(MVA) alliance.

The MVA alliance comprises of Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP), who reached a consensus of contesting 85 seats each, in the polls.

The Uddhav Sena has declared candidates for 65 seats, while Congress has named candidates for 48 seats, and the NCP has announced candidates for 45 seats.

According to the UBT’s first list, Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray would be contesting the polls from Mumbai’s Worli. Meanwhile Kedar Dighe, the nephew of late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, has been fielded from Thane’s Kopri-Panchpakhadi seat, where CM Eknath Shinde is in the fray. Other key names include Rajan Vichare who is contesting from the Thane seat, and Varun Sardesai from Bandra East.

Maharashtra Assembly Polls: Seat sharing tussle

While Congress’s Wadettiwar may have announced that ‘the problem of seat sharing has been resolved’, the tussle is still underway on 18 of the 288 seats as Samajwadi Party leader and MLA Abu Asim Azmi threatened to field candidates on 25 seats if the opposition alliance failed to keep aside five seats for his party’s candidates. The Samajwadi Party is also a part of the MVA.

The results for the election to 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will be declared on November 23.

'Robert Vadra is crime master Gogo’: BJP challenges Priyanka's asset declaration, says 'people with SUVs, farmhouses…' https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/24/robert-vadra-is-crime-master-gogo-bjp-challenges-priyankas-asset-declaration-says-people-with-suvs-farmhouses/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/24/robert-vadra-is-crime-master-gogo-bjp-challenges-priyankas-asset-declaration-says-people-with-suvs-farmhouses/?noamp=mobile#respond Thu, 24 Oct 2024 15:32:03 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/24/robert-vadra-is-crime-master-gogo-bjp-challenges-priyankas-asset-declaration-says-people-with-suvs-farmhouses/

Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is at the centre of controversy as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raises questions about the legitimacy of his declared assets. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that the assets listed in Priyanka’s election affidavit are significantly lower than the true value of what she and Vadra possess.

“The assets of Robert Vadra declared in the poll affidavit are lower than the income tax department’s demand,” Bhatia asserted, revealing that the total tax demand stands at 75 crore. He described Priyanka’s affidavit as a “confession of corruption” by the Gandhi family.

Priyanka Gandhi’s Electoral Debut

On Thursday, Priyanka Gandhi filed her nomination for the Wayanad bypoll, marking her official entry into electoral politics. However, her debut was overshadowed by the BJP’s fierce criticisms, which labelled her candidacy a “victory of dynastic politics and defeat of merit”.

According to her affidavit, Priyanka Gandhi had a total income of more than 46.39 lakh in the 2023-2024 financial year, including rental income and interest from banks and other investments.

The Congress candidate has also declared that her husband, Vadra, has movable assets worth more than 37.9 crore and immovable assets worth over 27.64 crore, raising eyebrows of the BJP regarding their true valuation.

BJP Raises Concerns Over Gandhis’ Property Values

Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Priyanka Gandhi undervalued her Shimla residence, a claim that feeds into broader accusations of financial impropriety.

“She has also shown the value of her house in Shimla much lower than what it is,” the BJP spokesperson alleged.

The BJP leader also questioned the legality of the Gandhis’ – Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi – property transactions, stating, “There are certain restrictions on buying property in Himachal Pradesh, but the rules were bent for the Gandhi family.”

“These are people with SUVs and farmhouses, big vehicles and big bungalows…. but they do not disclose the correct value of their assets,” the BJP leader said.

BJP Demands for Accountability from Congress

The BJP has ramped up calls for transparency from the Gandhi family, insisting that they must explain the sources of their wealth. “The entire country is asking Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to furnish the means of their ill-gotten money. Quid pro quo, ‘commission-khori’? Robert Vadra is crime master Gogo. He will take away something with him if he has come. Please let the country know about it,” Bhatia declared.

“Priyanka Gandhi is so eligible because she is the sister of a former president of the party, granddaughter of a former president of the party and mother of the future president of the party,” the BJP leader said, taking a dig at the Congress, without naming Rahul Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi‘s son Raihan Vadra.

'Constitution under constant attack': Rahul Gandhi slams Modi in poll-bound Jharkhand; says BJP controlling EC, CBI, ED https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/19/constitution-under-constant-attack-rahul-gandhi-slams-modi-in-poll-bound-jharkhand-says-bjp-controlling-ec-cbi-ed/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/19/constitution-under-constant-attack-rahul-gandhi-slams-modi-in-poll-bound-jharkhand-says-bjp-controlling-ec-cbi-ed/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 19 Oct 2024 17:29:19 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/19/constitution-under-constant-attack-rahul-gandhi-slams-modi-in-poll-bound-jharkhand-says-bjp-controlling-ec-cbi-ed/

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that the Constitution is “under attack” by the BJP as he accused the saffron party of controlling institutions such as the Election Commission, bureaucracy and central agencies.

He also said no force can stop the caste census and removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservation.

“The Constitution is under constant attack from all sides, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and it needs to be protected,” Gandhi alleged while addressing ‘Samvidhan Samman Sammelan’ in Ranchi ahead of the Jharkhand assembly polls.

In a no-holds-barred attack, he accused the BJP of “controlling the Election Commission, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax department, bureaucracy and judiciary”.

“The BJP also controls funds and institutions but we possess honesty. The Congress fought the Lok Sabha elections without money,” he claimed.

Gandhi said the caste census is a “medium for getting social X-ray but PM Modi is opposed to this”.

“However, no force can stop caste census, institutional survey and removal of 50 per cent cap on reservation despite no media or judiciary support,” he said.

Attacking Modi, he said that the Prime Minister often repeats that he respects the Constitution but in fact “he is making it hollow”.

Gandhi said that the BJP calls the tribals ‘Vanvasi’ instead of ‘Adivasi’. He alleged that BJP is trying to destroy tribals’ rich cultural heritage, history, ancient tradition and thousands of years old medical practices.

He said that thousands of years of thought, including those of Mahavir, Buddha, Birsa and Ambedkar, have been put behind Constitution.

“Our education system fails to teach us about indigenous people and the history of tribals, farmers and OBCs is being destroyed by the BJP,” he alleged.

OBCs are marginalised as only three OBCs officers were there among top 90 IAS officers in bureaucracy, while no Dalits or tribals were in key positions including in the finance ministry, Gandhi alleged.

“No Dalit, tribal or OBC is in the top management of 250 corporate firms or in key places in Bollywood,” he claimed.

He said Dalits and Adivasis comprise 15 per cent and 8 per cent respectively, while OBC population would be around 50 per cent in the country.

He alleged while the industrialists like Adanis and Ambanis were invited to Ayodhya Ram temple consecration, President Droupadi Murmu was not allowed as she is a tribal.

He also accused the saffron party of not allowing the President during the new Parliament inauguration because she is a tribal.

Gandhi claimed that 60 per cent of the GST is being paid by 50 per cent of the poor in the country while one per cent capitalists amassed 40 per cent of India’s capital.

Gandhi said that a battle between the Constitution and Manu’s ideology is underway for years.

“The most important thing is now to protect our Constitution,” he said.

This was Gandhi’s first visit to Jharkhand after the assembly poll schedule was announced.

The assembly polls in Jharkhand will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20 and counting will take place on November 23.

Earlier in the day, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that the INDIA bloc will contest the upcoming assembly polls together and the Congress and the JMM will field candidates in 70 of 81 seats.

Seat-sharing talks are on with alliance partners — the RJD and the Left parties — for the remaining 11 seats, he added.

The Congress has asked for a third seat from the Samajwadi Party for the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh as the party is unhappy with the two seats allocated to it, according to an India Today TV report.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had informally discussed the seat-sharing for upcoming bypolls during the swearing-in ceremony of Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar on October 16, the report said citing sources.

Currently, the Samajwadi Party has offered Ghaziabad and Khair seats to Congress. However, Congress is still claiming the Phulpur seat, where the Samajwadi Party has announced its own candidate, it added.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey, Party Chief Ajay Rai, and Party Leader Aradhana Mishra are negotiating with the Akhilesh Yadav-led party. However, the Samajwadi Party is not planning to give more seats, the report said.

The seat-sharing issue comes as Congress is under immense pressure from its allies to revise its poll strategy after the disappointing Haryana Assembly Election results and its failure to secure a seat in the Jammu region.

However, there are speculations that the Gandhi family discussed the Phulpur seat with Akhilesh Yadav, a seat where the Samajwadi Party has chosen Mustafa Siddiqui candidate, who had lost the previous election, the report stated.

The top leaders of Congress and Akhilesh Yadav will soon finalise the seat-sharing for UP bypolls, the report added citing sources from Congress.

The UP bypolls for nine seats will be conducted on November 13. The nine seats will include Karhal (Mainpuri), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Ghaziabad, Sisamau (Kanpur), Majhawan (Mirzapur), Phulpur (Prayagraj), Khair (Aligarh), Kundarki (Moradabad).

The seats fell vacant after the MLAs were elected as MPs in Lok Sabha Elections 2024, while Samajwadi Partly MLA from Sisamau, Irfan Solanki, was disqualified on criminal charges.

The counting of votes is scheduled for November 20.

The Congress and Samajwadi Party had previously contested together as the INDIA bloc for Lok Sabha elections.

Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections on November 20, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, on Friday, said he will speak to Rahul Gandhi, to finalise the seat sharing for Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra ahead of the Assembly elections. The leader said there were many seats on which decisions were pending.

Speaking of leaders who he says are not capable of taking decisions, Sanjay Raut said, “They have to send the list to Delhi again and again. Now that time has passed. We want this decision to be taken as soon as possible.” He said, “Most of the leaders of Maharashtra are not capable of taking decisions.”

On Thursday, the three Maha Vikas Aghadi allies: Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) arrived at a consensus on 200 assembly seats, out of the total 288 seats in Maharashtra. The Congress is looking to contest 110-120 seats, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) wants 90-100 and NCP (SP) is eyeing around 80 seats.

‘No major difference of opinion’

Sanjay Raut also said that while there is “no major difference of opinion between NCP and Shiv Sena, not even in Congress,” there were still some seats which all the three allies wanted to claim. The leader added that Nana Patole, the Congress President in Maharashtra was an ally, and that the seat sharing deadlock would be resolved soon.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) is fighting against the ruling Shinde led Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NCP’s Mahayuti alliance.

Maharahstra Assembly Election 2024 marks the first polls in the state after the Shiv Sena and NCP parties split in June 2022 and July 2023 respectively.

The recent assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir has raised a question mark over the reliability of exit poll forecasts again. Some are alleging that electronic voting machines (EVMs) aren’t foolproof, or that the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the mainstream media favour the ruling dispensation. On some such questions about the country’s electoral politics, urban Indians are largely split on party lines, the latest round of the YouGov-Mint-CPR Millennial Survey found.

Held in July 2024, weeks after the results of the Lok Sabha elections, the survey found that those leaning towards the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had a more positive mindset on these big questions, while Congress supporters showed scepticism.

This was the 12th round of our biannual survey, with 10,314 respondents across more than 200 towns and cities. The surveys are conducted by Mint in association with survey partner YouGov India and Delhi-based think tank Centre for Policy Research. Conducted since 2018, the surveys throw light on the beliefs, choices and anxieties of India’s young urban population.

In the latest round, 45% of the respondents were post-millennials (born after 1996) and 39% were millennials (born between 1981 and 1996). Around 46% said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was their most favoured party, while 15% said the same for the Congress.

Burning questions

Did the poll panel do well in conducting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in a free and fair manner? Nearly three in five (58%) respondents gave a positive assessment, while 42% felt it fell short. BJP supporters were the most satisfied, with 67% approving of the ECI’s conduct, compared to only 46% of Congress supporters. Among those who favour other parties or do not identify with any party, 53% showed satisfaction.

A larger proportion (61%) supported the continued use of EVMs, dismissing the allegations of tampering as unfounded. The rest were in favour of the paper ballot system as they felt it would be more foolproof. The opinion on EVMs again varied by political affiliation—BJP supporters (71%) were the most positive, against only 46% of Congress supporters. Among others, a majority favoured the use of EVMs over the paper ballot.

Did the media give favourable coverage to the BJP during the election campaign, or did they give fair coverage to all political parties? The respondents were again split: 54% believed that the media had favoured the BJP, while 46% felt media coverage was fair to all. Interestingly, 47% of BJP supporters agreed that the media favoured their party, with 53% stating it gave fair coverage. On the contrary, 64% of Congress supporters felt the media was biased; supporters of other parties (60%) and non-identifiers (57%), too, shared the perception.

Are exit polls reliable?

Public opinion was divided on the integrity of exit poll projections, with 46% believing that the forecasts for the 2024 elections were fraudulent and reeked of a scam, as alleged by the Congress soon after the results. The rest said exit polls can go wrong but allegations of fraud were baseless. Among BJP supporters, three-fifths (60%) trusted the exit polls and rejected fraud claims. But 56% of Congress supporters believed the exit polls were fraudulent. The survey indicates that trust in exit polls is closely tied to party loyalty, with BJP supporters showing more trust in their legitimacy.

Opinions on the frequency of elections and simultaneous state and national elections are mixed. Overall, one in three respondents (33%) believed that holding multiple election cycles is a waste of money and time, while another one-third (34%) said the status quo of staggered elections strengthens democracy. Meanwhile, 19% expressed concerns that such a move could create problems, and the remaining (14%) were unfamiliar with the proposal. The Cabinet recently gave its approval to the idea based on recommendations of a panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Older respondents were more likely to view multiple elections as wasteful, while post-millennials were more inclined to believe that varying election cycles strengthen democracy. Political affiliation also plays a role: 41% of BJP supporters had the view that multiple election cycles waste resources, compared to only 24% of Congress supporters, who were more likely to favour staggered elections (39%).

The survey suggests that the perception of electoral issues is increasingly shaped by party affiliations. BJP supporters generally exhibit greater trust in the ECI, EVMs, and exit polls, and are more likely to see media coverage as fair. In contrast, supporters of the Congress and smaller parties tend to be apprehensive and perceive biases. The opinion is divided on the question of simultaneous elections and there exists a general agreement on what is expected from coalition arrangements.
