New Delhi: After spending nearly three weeks under detention in Uganda, billionaire Pankaj Oswal’s daughter is out on bail. She however still remains in Uganda.

Vasundhara’s family spoke exclusively to Zee media describing the time that the former had to spend in Ugandan jail. Vasundhara’s mother Radhika Oswal and her sister Ridi Oswal told Zee Media that Vasundhara was released on bail, 21st October, after a traumatising three weeks, but the saga is far from over.

Excerpts…

1. After her initial bail rejection, Vasundhara is now out on bail. What is the Oswal family’s reaction?

Although the alleged victim has testified that he has experienced no wrongdoing whatsoever, it is shocking that her charges have not yet been completely dropped. It’s absurd that the threat of further jail time or even a trial looms over Vasundhara while the alleged victim has clearly accepted that no wrongdoing occurred. This situation appears to be a devious scheme driven by ulterior motives, influenced by business competitors and their connections with corrupt officials.

2. Was the family able to talk to Vasundhara during her time in the Jail?

Now that Vasundhara is out on bail, we talk every day. But during her time in prison, she could only contact us twice a week. She shared that she had to literally beg the officers for a phone and was made to wait an hour just to speak with us for ten minutes, twice a week. It was an incredibly traumatising experience for all of us to be completely cut off from her and unable to help while she was in an African jail for absolutely no wrongdoing.

3. What is Vasundhara’s current situation?

Vasundhara has endured an extremely traumatic experience, and right now, our priority is giving her the space and support she needs to process everything. Her focus remains on clearing these preposterous and entirely false allegations, and as a family, we’re standing by her through this challenging time.

Vasundhara was detained from the Oswal’s extra-neutral alcohol (ENA) plant in Uganda. The 26-year-old was detained on October 1, allegedly in a missing man’s case.

The family had filed UN appeal over the daughter’s ‘illegal detention’ stating that Vasundhara’s arrest/detention stemmed from ‘false allegations’ by the conglomerate’s former employee over murder and kidnap of Mukesh Menaria.

Menaria had worked on her family’s private jet and as a domestic help in their residences across the world. The Oswal family has claimed that charges against their daughter Vasundhara are false, adding that the resentful former employee has since admitted to the fact. Oswals said that Mukesh was found alive and was in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, as per a report in the Wion, Ugandan Police Force Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said, “all the suspicions rest on his (Menaria’s) employers who could have taken him. He might be in their custody.”

Wion reports added that as the investigations continue, Menaria has been brought to Uganda now.

Pankaj Oswal claimed that Vasundhara was interrogated under inappropriate conditions and held for over 90 hours without access to legal counsel or family.

Renowned Indian-origin industrialist Pankaj Oswal has claimed that his 26-year-old daughter has been illegally detained in Uganda. According to Oswal, his daughter has been detained without trial since October 1 due to “corporate and political manipulation”.

Pankaj claimed that his daughter, Vasundhara Oswal, the executive director of PRO Industries, has been fabricated under false charges by a former employee, who had stolen valuables and taken a loan of $200,000 with Oswal’s family as guarantors.

When the Oswal family refused to repay the loan, they allegedly faced false accusations aimed at evading the financial obligations. Despite the employee being apprehended in Tanzania, Vasundhara has been unjustly accused of kidnapping and attempted murder, according to her father.

The Swiss industrialist has filed an urgent appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, seeking international intervention in the matter. He alleged that Vasundhara was interrogated under inappropriate conditions and held for over 90 hours without access to legal counsel or family. Despite a court order for her unconditional release, the police have reportedly slapped inadmissible charges to prevent her release on bail.

“Not letting her be in touch with her family and lawyers and also snatching her phone from her, causing her to have an anxiety attack, which they did not acknowledge. This all while she is still being unlawfully detained with no evidence against her,” the family said in a post on Vasundhara’s Instagram account.

Pankaj has also written an open letter to the President of Uganda, appealing for his intervention. In a further effort to secure his daughter’s release, Oswal has engaged renowned human rights lawyer Cherie Blair CBE, KC, whose office stated that Vasundhara’s treatment constitutes a breach of both domestic and international laws.

Vasundhara’s mother, Radhika Oswal, speaking to an EU reporter said, “This is every mother’s nightmare. My young daughter has been thrown into a foreign jail. She has been stripped of her basic human rights and her dignity. Vasundhara is an innocent bystander. All I want is her safety, and for her to be back in my arms.”

Pankaj Oswal is the son of industrialist Abhay Kumar Oswal, who was the founder of Oswal Agro Mills and Oswal Greentech. The Oswal Group Global has holdings in petrochemicals, real estate, fertilisers and mining.

The billionaire couple Pankaj and Radhika Oswal have lived in Switzerland for the past 10 years with their two daughters Vasundhara and Ridi after they shifted from Australia.
