NEW DELHI: Campaigning came to a halt on Monday for high-stakes assembly polls in Maharashtra and the second phase in Jharkhand on November 20, the two states being more than just electoral battles for BJP and Congress, leaders of their respective alliances, with results poised to shape their political narrative and future trajectory. The match-up follows BJP’s stunning come-from-behind victory in Haryana and has increased the stake for Congress and its allies to win the two battles in order to regain the momentum they seemed to have after paring down BJP’s Lok Sabha tally.
BJP obviously wants to build on the advantage it grabbed in Haryana.
In Maharashtra, BJP, through its Mahayuti alliance with Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), is aiming to hold on to the state. The state had witnessed significant political realignments, with splits within its major political entities, creating a complex chessboard for parties to manoeuvre.
BJP has highlighted its governance through development projects and economic policies. The ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme was a centrepiece, promising financial assistance to women, aiming to capture the support of this significant voter demographic.
Urban areas like Mumbai saw BJP campaign on law enforcement and anti-terrorism, while also subtly promoting its cultural nationalist agenda to consolidate Hindu votes with slogans like ‘ek hain to safe hain’ and ‘batenge to katenge’. BJP has positioned itself as the stable anchor of Mahayuti, promising governance free from the turbulence of internal party disputes.
BJP on Monday launched a new ad campaign attacking the opposition MVA and urging people to ‘say no to Congress’. The campaign highlighted various incidents from the past, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the lynching of sadhus in Palghar when Maha Vikas Aghadi was in office. BJP is contesting 149 seats, Shiv Sena 81 and Ajit Pawar-led NC for the 288-member House.
MVA was well ahead of the Mahayuti in Lok Sabha polls and the alliance is hoping that the momentum is carried forward into these elections.
The polls, moreover, will determine which is the real Shiv Sena and the real NCP, so a lot is at stake for Eknath Shinde, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar. It is because of the decisive nature of this poll that Uddhav has been harping on the ‘gaddar’ (betrayer) line to draw the sympathy vote, while Pawar Sr has been urging voters not just to defeat his nephew’s NCP but to defeat it big.

NEW DELHI/RANCHI: Voter turnout among the women exceeded the men’s by almost 4.7 percentage points in Ph-I of the Jharkhand elections, with the trend seen in all but six of 43 assembly constituencies that went to the polls Wednesday.
The state witnessed an overall EVM turnout of 66.6%, 2.7 percentage points higher than the 63.9 polling recorded in the 2019 assembly polls. Female EVM turnout was a shade over 69%, even as male voters lagged behind with 64.3% participation. Third-gender voters clocked 31% turnout.
INDIA bloc claimed the female turnout showed the popularity of welfare schemes of the Hemant Soren govt, the Maiyya Samman Yojana in particular. BJP, on the other hand, said the high turnout showed women’s disenchantment with the Soren govt.
37 of 43 Jharkhand seats saw higher female turnout in Phase-1
A daily account of such postal ballots received are given to all candidates. INDIA bloc, comprising JMM, Congress and RJD, claimed higher turnout of women showed popularity of welfare schemes of the Hemant Soren govt, Maiyya Samman Yojana in particular under which Rs 1,000 per month is given to women beneficiaries.
BJP, on the other hand, said high turnout showed women’s disenchantment with Soren govt. “They have voted in large numbers because they are fed up with over 7,000 cases of crimes against women in the past five years. They have voted in large numbers because BJP promised Rs 2,100 under Gogo Didi Yojana,” BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said.
Of 43 assembly constituencies (AC) that voted on Nov 13, 37 recorded a higher female turnout as compared to men. Only six ACs – Potka, Jugsalai, Jamshedpur East, Seraikela, Tamar and Khunti – recorded higher male polling percentage, though the gender gap was less than one percentage point in four of these six ACs. In Barkatha and Barhi, the gap between female and male turnout was almost 17 percentage points and 15 percentage points, respectively.
Baharagora witnessed highest overall turnout at 79.3%, thanks to its women voters whose participation was 81.6%. Kharsawan followed with 79.1% overall turnout and almost 80% polling by women. Ranchi witnessed urban apathy and recorded the lowest polling at 52.5%. While 13 of the 43 ACs covered in Phase 1 recorded a turnout of over 70%, polling was in the range of 60-70% for 25 ACs and below 60% for five ACs.
Jharkhand Assembly Elections: Ahead of the upcoming state assembly polls, former BJP leaders Dr Lois Marandi, Kunal Sarangi, and Ganesh Mahali joined Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Monday and met CM Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren.
Dr Loise Marandi was the former BJP Vice President from the state and joined Hemant Soren’s party after she was denied a ticket from her home constituency, Dumka, and was asked to contest the election from Bahrai. Meanwhile, Kunal Sarangi cited his struggles in getting promotion as one of the reasons to exit the saffron party.
“I gave 24 years to Dumka so how can I contest the election from Barhait? I know nothing about that place but I know everything about Dumka…so I refused to contest election from Barhait. Party did not listen and fielded someone else from Dumka…I need a platform to serve the people…I spoke to CM Hemant Soren and he welcomed…,” ANI quoted Dr Lois Marandi as saying.
Expressing her disappointment with the saffron party after being denied Dumka constituency, Dr Lois Marandi said, “I gave so much time to the party (BJP), day and night I kept working for the people and obeyed every instruction of the party with at most sincerity but when the elections came, party told me to contest from Barhait.”
Ex-BJP leader Kunal Sarangi joined the JMM party after he failed to get any opportunity to grow and perform in the BJP. Sarangi told ANI that he had returned to JMM after he was disappointed with BJP because of ‘corruption and sycophancy’.
“I have come back to my family, it is not a rejoining because this was the platform which was given to me by CM Hemant Soren which offered me an opportunity to enter Jharkhand politics and serve people…now I have returned because when I had joined BJP, I went with a thought that perhaps through a national platform I would get to serve more people…but contrary to that the only parameter that they have is, in order to get promoted…is how many ‘Ganesh parikramas’ you do every day and absolute sycophancy…perhaps you also need to have few degrees in corruption,” ANI quoted Sarangi as saying.
“So these are the learnings that I have received in the last four and half years stay in that party and I am very happy that I have retured to where I started my politcial journey from,” he added.
