Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has erupted eight times, spewing a massive column of ash and prompting the government to consider permanent relocation for residents nearby.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Thursday’s eruptions, the ash plume rising 2,500 metres (8,200 feet) from its peak, but residents on the tourist island of Flores were seen fleeing in panic.

Officials raised the alert for the 1,703-metre (5,587-foot) twin-peaked volcano to the highest level.

At least 5,816 of the more than 16,000 people living in areas near the volcano had been evacuated to other villages, said Heronimus Lamawuran, a spokesperson for the Flores regional government.

The country’s Center for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation said a mixture of rock, lava and gas was also thrown up to 1km (0.6 miles) from its crater.

The volcano erupted on Monday and Tuesday, killing at least 10 people and forcing the relocation of residents from a 7km (4.3-mile) exclusion zone.

Anastasia Adriyani, 41, who lives outside the exclusion zone, described the eruption on Thursday as the biggest since she lived in Lewolaga village.

“I was cooking at the community kitchen [for evacuees] when it happened. I ran back home. I was very scared.”

The new eruptions sent residents running from their homes in nearby villages, the AFP news agency reported, adding that volcanic lightning was also seen.

The authorities warned the thousands of people who fled not to return to their homes, as the government planned to move the rest of the 16,000 residents out of the danger zone, said National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) chief Suharyanto, who like many Indonesians uses a single name.

“Permanent relocation is considered as a long-term mitigation measure to anticipate eruption in the future,” Suharyanto told reporters after visiting the devastated areas on Thursday.

Laki-Laki, which means “man” in Indonesian, is twinned with a calmer volcano named after the Indonesian word for “woman”.

Lewotobi Laki-Laki is one of the 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago of 280 million people.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

On October 27, West Sumatra province’s Mount Marapi – one of the country’s most active volcanoes – also erupted.

A landslide in a remote site of Western Sumatra province on Sumatra Island killed at least 15 people and left dozens missing, after heavy rainfall in the area.
While talking to AFP, Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Ilham Wahab said, “The information we can provide was that a landslide occurred at a gold mine last night, causing several people to be buried.Efforts to search for the victims are ongoing.”
Ilham said that three people were injured and 25 were still missing.
The Southeast Asian archipelago is filled with unlicensed mines. Ilham couldn’t confirm whether the site in question was legal or illegal.
He said that all the activities at the site are halted as of now, and the search efforts for the missings are underway.
Ilham could not confirm if the mine in question was illegal but said all activities at the site had been halted as search efforts for the missing were ongoing.
These abandoned sites in the region attract locals who hunt for leftover gold ore without proper safety equipment.
Search efforts were delayed due to the remote location, with rescuers—police, soldiers, and civilians—walking hours from the nearest village to reach the site.
“The location is quite far, the terrain is tough. This has hampered evacuation efforts but people are helping so that this evacuation process can be carried out quickly,” he said.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, typically between November and April.
In July, a landslide at an illegal gold mine on Sulawesi Island killed at least 27 people.
Similarly, in May, flooding and landslides in South Sulawesi province left at least 15 dead and swept away dozens of houses and roads.

Bharat Web3 Association Signs Pro-Web3 MoUs with Australia, Indonesia: All Details https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/25/bharat-web3-association-signs-pro-web3-mous-with-australia-indonesia-all-details/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/25/bharat-web3-association-signs-pro-web3-mous-with-australia-indonesia-all-details/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 25 Sep 2024 13:51:59 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/25/bharat-web3-association-signs-pro-web3-mous-with-australia-indonesia-all-details/

The Bharat Web3 Association (BWA), India’s leading non-governmental advisory group for Web3, is expanding its international presence. On Wednesday, September 25, the BWA signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Australia and Indonesia. This initiative aims to unite global Web3 efforts and collaboratively enhance the ecosystem’s growth. BWA Chairperson Dilip Chenoy noted that these MoUs represent a significant milestone in fostering a cohesive global Web3 landscape.

In an official statement, the BWA emphasised that the regulatory frameworks and policies established by international bodies to foster the safe and regulated growth of the Web3 sector could also benefit India’s blockchain industry.

Through these Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), India, Australia, and Indonesia will collaborate on key Web3 areas such as research, education, and advocacy. The broader goal is to accelerate the adoption of blockchain-based solutions across multiple countries.

In Australia, the BWA signed an MoU with the Digital Economy Council of Australia (DECA), formerly known as Blockchain Australia, which represents businesses and individuals exploring blockchain technology.

Commenting on this MoU with the BWA, the spokesperson of the DECA said, “Recognising the growth and potential of this technology within India and Australia through fostering opportunities between our members, we hope to see the industry continue to flourish across borders.”

In Indonesia, the BWA has formed a partnership with the Asosiasi Blockchain Indonesia, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the adoption and development of blockchain technology in the region.

“We view our partnership with the BWA as a vital opportunity to collaboratively enhance cross-border blockchain adoption,” said Asih Karnengsih, Executive Director of Asosiasi Blockchain Indonesia, commenting on the development.

Prior to signing these MoUs with Australia and Indonesia, the BWA had teamed up with the Japan ANICANA Dealers Association (JADA) to collaborate on the growth of Web3 services.

In India, the BWA has urged the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to provide a level playing field for Web3 businesses.

Discovery of "hobbit" fossils suggests tiny humans once roamed Indonesia https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/06/discovery-of-hobbit-fossils-suggests-tiny-humans-once-roamed-indonesia/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/06/discovery-of-hobbit-fossils-suggests-tiny-humans-once-roamed-indonesia/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 06 Aug 2024 21:10:00 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/06/discovery-of-hobbit-fossils-suggests-tiny-humans-once-roamed-indonesia/

Twenty years ago on an Indonesian island, scientists discovered fossils of an early human species that stood at about 3 1/2 feet tall, earning them the nickname “hobbits.”

Now a new study suggests ancestors of the hobbits were even slightly shorter.

“We did not expect that we would find smaller individuals from such an old site,” said Yousuke Kaifu, co-author of the study, which was published on Tuesday in the journal Nature.

The original hobbit fossils date back to between 60,000 and 100,000 years ago. The new fossils were excavated at a site called Mata Menge, about 45 miles from the cave where the first hobbit remains were uncovered. The fossils were found on the top of a ribbon-shaped, pebbly sandstone layer in a small stream. They included exceptionally small teeth that possibly came from two individuals, researchers said.

In 2016, researchers suspected the earlier relatives could be shorter than the hobbits after studying a jawbone and teeth collected from the new site. Further analysis of a tiny arm bone fragment and teeth suggests the ancestors were a mere 2.4 inches shorter and existed 700,000 years ago.

“They’ve convincingly shown that these were very small individuals,” said Dean Falk, an evolutionary anthropologist at Florida State University who was not involved with the research.

Researchers have debated how the hobbits — named Homo floresiensis after the remote Indonesian island of Flores — evolved to be so small and where they fall in the human evolutionary story. They’re thought to be among the last early human species to go extinct.

Scientists don’t yet know whether the hobbits shrank from an earlier, taller human species called Homo erectus that lived in the area, or from an even more primitive human predecessor. More research — and fossils — are needed to pin down the hobbits’ place in human evolution, said Matt Tocheri, an anthropologist at Canada’s Lakehead University.

“This question remains unanswered and will continue to be a focus of research for some time to come,” Tocheri, who was not involved with the research, said in an email.
