Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first formal talks in five years on Wednesday, signalling that ties between the Asian giants damaged by a deadly military clash in 2020 had begun to recover.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Brics summit in the Russian city of Kazan, the Indian government and Chinese state media said, two days after New Delhi announced that it had reached a deal with Beijing to resolve the four-year military stand-off on their disputed Himalayan frontier.

Relations between the world’s two most populous nations — both nuclear powers — have been strained since a clash between their troops on the largely undemarcated frontier in the western Himalayas of Ladakh left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead in 2020.

The neighbours increased their military presence along the icy frontier since, adding tens of thousands of troops and weapons over the last four years.

Modi and Xi had not held formal bilateral talks since although they both participated in multilateral events. Their last summit talks were held in October 2019 in the southern Indian town of Mamallapuram.

The two spoke briefly on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022 and exchanged courtesies.

They spoke again on the sidelines of the Brics summit in Johannesburg in August 2023 but ended up releasing different versions of the conversation, indicating the two sides didn’t see eye to eye.

Xi skipped the G20 summit hosted by New Delhi the following month, a decision seen as another setback to their relations.

Diplomatic efforts gained momentum in recent months after foreign ministers of the two countries met in July and agreed to step up talks to ease the border tensions.

As India had made improving the wider political and damaged business ties contingent upon finding a solution to the border stand-off, Wednesday’s talks between the two leaders are expected to result in potentially more Chinese investment into India.

New Delhi had increased the scrutiny of investments coming from China, blocked direct flights between the two countries and had practically barred issuing any visas to Chinese nationals since the Ladakh clashes.

Neither New Delhi nor Beijing — which confirmed the border pact on Tuesday — has shared details of how the stand-off will be resolved under the deal agreed to this week.

An Indian military source told Reuters that the pact will allow both sides to patrol contested points on the frontier according to an agreed schedule to prevent confrontations.

‘Anyone threatens India, he’s a total killer’: Trump on PM Modi https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/09/anyone-threatens-india-hes-a-total-killer-trump-on-pm-modi/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/09/anyone-threatens-india-hes-a-total-killer-trump-on-pm-modi/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 09 Oct 2024 15:19:22 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/10/09/anyone-threatens-india-hes-a-total-killer-trump-on-pm-modi/

Amid the media blitz for the US Presidential election, Donald Trump spoke on the Flagrant Podcast, hosted by Andrew Schulz and Akaash Singh, where he shared his views on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking in a segment about Modi, Trump said: “Modi… India, he’s a friend of mine, he’s great. Before him, they were replacing them every year, very unstable. On the outside, he looks like your father, he’s the nicest guy, but he’s a total killer.”
Trump reminisced about the Howdy Modi event in Houston, saying it was “beautiful and they filled up the stadium.” He added: “We had a couple of occasions, when someone was threatening India, he would totally change.I said, let me help, I am very good with those people.” Trump recalled Modi’s firm stance, quoting him: “I will do it, I will do anything necessary, we have defeated them for hundreds of years.”
Trump continued: “He was talking about a certain country; you can probably guess the country. But I said, whoa, what happened there? They are all smart, and he’s a very good person.”

Modi and Trump have always had a close relationship. This connection was prominently displayed at the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston, Texas, in September 2019. Attended by over 50,000 Indian-Americans, this event was a historic moment in US-India relations. Trump’s participation was a notable gesture, with both leaders praising each other and underscoring the growing ties between their countries. Modi referred to Trump as a “true friend,” and Trump, in turn, applauded Modi’s leadership and the contributions of the Indian diaspora.
In February 2020, Trump made a reciprocal visit to India for the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad. Held at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the event was attended by over 100,000 people, making it Trump’s largest rally outside the US. Trump used the occasion to praise Modi’s leadership and India’s economic progress, emphasising the shared democratic values that bond the two nations. More recently, Trump had said that ‘fantastic Modi’ was going to meet him for the Quad Summit, but the meeting didn’t take place.
