Apple has been reported to be developing a tabletop device that will have a robotic actuator and use artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in tasks. This initiative was said to be launched following the shuttering of the Apple Car project – the Cupertino-based tech giant’s autonomous vehicle that was slated to be introduced as a potential competitor to Tesla. A report now suggests that the purported Apple robotic device would serve multiple purposes, including aiding in video conferencing and acting as a watchdog when the user is away from home.

Apple AI-Powered Tabletop Robotic Device Uses

In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple’s purported tabletop device will likely launch in 2026 or 2027. It will reportedly be equipped with a robotic actuator that would control the in-built iPad-like screen at the top, allowing its 360-degree rotation and tilt movement. The device is said to have been codenamed J595.

As per Gurman, the purported robotic device would fulfill three purposes:

  1. Function as a portable computer in non-ideal locations
  2. Help in capturing images or taking videoconference calls by functioning as a tripod with an iPad
  3. Serve as a remote home security surveillance tool when the user is not at home

While the device isn’t even official, the report speculates that the device’s display could swivel when the user wants to take video conferencing calls in non-ideal locations, such as the kitchen. It could also gain spatial awareness courtesy of special hardware and software, in addition to integrated AI capabilities.

The idea for the tabletop robotic device is reported to have been approved by the company in 2022 but its development has only gained pace in recent months, following the cancellation of the Apple Car project. Its development is said to be solely being spearheaded by Kevin Lynch, who led the company’s former project.

Previous reports have suggested that the purported device could also become Apple’s first home gadget to get features powered by Apple Intelligence – its AI suite. Gurman also suggested that it may also respond to commands such as “look at me”, by repositioning the screen to face the speaker, leveraging the company’s voice assistant Siri.

However, it could be an expensive affair. According to Gurman, the iPhone maker is said to be working to bring its price down to $1000 (roughly Rs. 84,000).

Apple Reportedly Developing AI-Powered Tabletop Robotic Device With an iPad for Smart Home Automation https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/16/apple-reportedly-developing-ai-powered-tabletop-robotic-device-with-an-ipad-for-smart-home-automation/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/16/apple-reportedly-developing-ai-powered-tabletop-robotic-device-with-an-ipad-for-smart-home-automation/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 16 Aug 2024 06:06:58 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/08/16/apple-reportedly-developing-ai-powered-tabletop-robotic-device-with-an-ipad-for-smart-home-automation/

Apple may be developing a tabletop device that uses robotics to control various smart home devices, according to a report. The purported device is said to have a robotic arm that can move an iPad placed at the top which acts as a screen. This development builds upon a previous claim that the Cupertino-based tech giant could introduce Apple Intelligence – its suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features – to its smart home devices but none of the existing ones would get it. Instead, an under-development device would have the Apple Intelligence features.

Apple Tabletop Robotic Device

According to a report (behind a paywall) Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s purported smart home gadget would essentially be an iPad with AI features that will be attached to a robotic arm. It is speculated to have actuators that can tilt the display and even rotate it 360 degrees. The device is said to have been codenamed J595. The idea for the device is reported to have been approved by the company in 2022 but its development has only gained pace in recent months.

According to Gurman, it would serve three purposes, the first of which is a smart home command centre that would control all the connected home devices. Additionally, it may also act as a videoconferencing device and the 360-degree rotatable robotic arm could aid it in mimicking the head movement of the user during a FaceTime call. The purported device is also said to have a use as a remote-controlled home security tool.

Previous reports suggested that the upcoming device could become Apple’s first home device to get Apple Intelligence features. Gurman says it could be controlled using Siri – the company’s AI-powered voice assistant. Leveraging the robotic arm, it is speculated to respond to commands such as “look at me” by repositioning the screen to face the speaker.

Gurman first mentioned the device in an April report, where he said it would be “an advanced table-top home device that uses robotics to move a display around.” At the time, its development was reported to be led by John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, in collaboration with its engineering division. Two other Apple executives – Matt Costello and Brian Lynch – were also said to be involved with the project.

However, the latest report suggests that Kevin Lynch, who led the now-cancelled Apple Car project, is solely responsible for the development of the tabletop device. The iPhone maker is expecting to launch the product in 2026 or 2027 and is said to be working to bring its price down to $1000 (roughly Rs. 84,000).

Apple Reportedly Planning to Introduce Apple Intelligence to Its Home Devices With a New Table-Top Robot https://thenewshub.in/2024/07/09/apple-reportedly-planning-to-introduce-apple-intelligence-to-its-home-devices-with-a-new-table-top-robot/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/07/09/apple-reportedly-planning-to-introduce-apple-intelligence-to-its-home-devices-with-a-new-table-top-robot/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 09 Jul 2024 06:36:59 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/07/09/apple-reportedly-planning-to-introduce-apple-intelligence-to-its-home-devices-with-a-new-table-top-robot/

Apple Intelligence was announced for several devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. An earlier report also highlighted that the artificial intelligence (AI) suite of features may also be added to the Apple Vision Pro, the company’s mixed-reality headset. But the company’s home devices such as the HomePod and Apple TV are not expected to get any AI capabilities in the near future. However, a new report claims that the company is working on a new robotic table-top device, which could be the first home device to flaunt Apple Intelligence features.

Apple Reportedly Working on a Table-Top Robotic Device

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed in his Power On newsletter that Apple has no plans to introduce AI features to its HomePod or Apple TV lineup. Instead, the first home device by the company to get Apple Intelligence will be a device which is reportedly still under development. Gurman claims the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on a table-top home device that will use robotic mechanisms as well.

Gurman first mentioned the device in an April report, where he said it would be “an advanced table-top home device that uses robotics to move a display around.” The idea behind the device is said to add a display that mimics the head movements of the user during a FaceTime call.

The device can also reportedly lock on to a single person standing in a group during a video call. The AI features that might be integrated into this device is currently unknown. There is also no word on when the device might be introduced. Further, the report highlighted that some Apple executives were concerned about whether consumers would pay for a device like this.

Last week, a report highlighted Apple’s plans to introduce a new HomePod with a touchscreen display attached to it. While there is no way to confirm, it is possible that the table-top robotic device was a reference to this.

Separately, Gurman has also claimed that the AI-powered Siri will not be rolled out in beta till January 2025. A public release is said to take till the iOS 18.4 update, which is expected to arrive in springtime next year.
