As alcohol decreases vasopressin levels, the body releases more water, heightening the risk of dehydration and resulting headaches. (News18 Hindi)

Many individuals experience headaches after consuming alcohol, commonly known as hangovers. While it is widely believed that both the quality and quantity of alcohol can trigger these painful episodes, health experts emphasize that the ingredients in the drink also play a significant role.

Talking to News18, Dr Deepika Sagar, Head of the Department of Neurology at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh said that understanding these factors is crucial for managing hangover symptoms effectively.

“Consuming alcohol leads to dehydration by disrupting the production of a hormone called vasopressin, which helps the kidneys retain water. When alcohol decreases vasopressin levels, the body releases more water, heightening the risk of dehydration and resulting headaches,” Dr Sagar said.

According to Dr Sagar, the quality of alcohol affects headaches, but this is not the only reason. Low-quality alcohol contains more byproducts called congeners, which increase headaches and other hangover symptoms. These congeners are produced during the process of making alcohol and are especially found in dark liquors such as red wine, whiskey, and brandy.

Scientific reason for hangover or headache

Dr Sagar explains that high levels of congeners in alcohol can lead to increased headaches. Ethanol, the main component of alcohol, affects blood sugar levels, which can result in headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

Additionally, frequent urination can cause dehydration, further increasing the likelihood of headaches. The presence of adulterants or harmful chemicals in low-quality alcohol can also contribute to headaches.

How to avoid hangover?

Dr Deepika Sagar says that high-quality alcohol contains fewer congeners, which reduces the chances of headaches. Drinking more water alongside alcohol can help prevent dehydration and lower the likelihood of headaches.

It is also advisable to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol, as this can increase headaches and hangovers. Dr Sagar also said that alcohol not only causes headaches but can also affect other organs, including the liver. Therefore, she urges people to consider staying away from alcohol.
