Billy Bob Thornton on “Landman”

Billy Bob Thornton on starring in new drama, “Landman” from “Yellowstone” creator

07:30

Oscar-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton joined “CBS Mornings” to discuss his new role in “Landman,” the latest Paramount Plus series from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan. Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, a man tasked with managing land and people in the oil-rich landscapes of West Texas.

Thornton’s character works in the world of oil rigs, securing land and overseeing everyone from workers to billionaires who fuel the oil industry. The role was made with Thornton in mind since Sheridan wrote the role specifically for him.

“He said, ‘I’m going to write it in your voice.’ So when I read the first script, sure enough, it’s like, yeah, if I were a landman, I think I’d try to be like that,” said Thornton.

Thornton said he prefers to stick to roles within his strengths.

‘I don’t take things that I’m not right for,” Thornton said. “If I read something and it fits like a glove, then those are the things I do if I’m interested in the subject.”

When it comes to describing what a landman is, Thornton said that a landman is a middleman between the oil company owners and the workers in the fields. His job is to protect the workers while making sure they do their tasks to extract oil, because he needs to earn money for his employer.

“The show is really about how the people who work in and around the oil business are affected, how relationships are affected. It’s a dangerous business, and it’s a gamble also,” Thornton said.

“Landman” premieres Sunday, Nov. 17, exclusively on Paramount+.

John Driskell Hopkins announces $3 million donation for ALS research and coping with his diagnosis: https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/13/john-driskell-hopkins-announces-3-million-donation-for-als-research-and-coping-with-his-diagnosis/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/13/john-driskell-hopkins-announces-3-million-donation-for-als-research-and-coping-with-his-diagnosis/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 18:01:51 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/13/john-driskell-hopkins-announces-3-million-donation-for-als-research-and-coping-with-his-diagnosis/

Grammy winner John Driskell Hopkins, known as “Hop” from the Zac Brown Band, is turning his personal battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, into a mission to help others.

After he was diagnosed with the disease in 2021, Hopkins and his wife, Jen, founded the “Hop On A Cure” foundation to raise awareness and funds. This year, they plan to donate $3 million for grants and research, he announced on “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday.

He is also releasing a new single, “Each Other,” which ventures into his journey since the diagnosis.

“When you’re given a life-threatening diagnosis, you really start to focus on things that matter,” he said.

In 2019, Hopkins said he began noticing his right hand was “slowing down.” It took two years to receive an ALS diagnosis. ALS is a nervous system disease that can cause loss of muscle control and worsens over time, according to the Mayo Clinic.

He pointed out that ALS cases can differ significantly, with his own case being slow-progressing and primarily affecting his upper motor neurons rather than the lower ones, which he said causes difficulty speaking, walking and playing as quickly as he used to.

Hopkins said he felt scared when he first got his diagnosis. For the first two months, he felt like he was losing control. Things took a positive turn when he went to the Steve Gleason gala in March 2022, where he and his wife found their support team.

He said there is an urgent need for ALS research, mentioning that the disease is expected to increase by 70% over the next 10 to 12 years.

Despite the challenges that ALS brings, Hopkins remains optimistic and looks to inspire others through his music and message.

“I am going to sing through it,” Hopkins said.

Netflix’s cheaper, ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after it was launched.

The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. Netflix said it continues “to see positive momentum and growth across all areas of the business,” adding it has seen “steady progress across all countries’ member bases.”

Netflix launched the option in November 2022 as one of its responses to a slowdown in subscriber growth.

Recently, subscriber growth hasn’t been an issue. Last month Netflix reported it added 5.1 million subscribers during the third quarter, beating Wall Street estimates. In total, Netflix counts 282.7 million memberships across all of its pricing tiers.

Beginning next year, Netflix said it will no longer update investors on its subscriber numbers as it shifts focus toward revenue and other financial metrics as performance indicators.

When Netflix launched its ad platform two years ago, the company said Nielsen would rate its content.

Netflix in May announced it would air two National Football League games on Christmas Day this year as part of a three-year deal. On Tuesday it said it sold out of its ad inventory for the two live games.

Netflix also said it’s brought on FanDuel and Verizon as advertisers for the games. FanDuel will become the exclusive pregame sportsbook betting partner, Netflix said, and will have a sponsored in-show feature.

Media companies have been focusing on ad-supported strategies for their streaming options that woo customers with cheaper plans and also offer advertising revenue that can help move the streaming businesses toward profitability. While the ad market has been slow for traditional TV, it has grown for streaming and digital businesses.

Netflix offered its last update on its ad-supported tier in May, when it said it reached 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure it had shared in January. That announcement came during Upfronts, when media companies make their pitches to advertisers.

Netflix also announced in May it would launch its own advertising platform, ending a partnership with Microsoft for that technology. It’s rolled out the platform in Canada and plans to launch it in the U.S. by the end of the second quarter next year. It plans to set the platform live everywhere by the end of 2025.

Mattel pulls thousands of 'Wicked' dolls off shelves after printing adult website on packaging https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/11/mattel-pulls-thousands-of-wicked-dolls-off-shelves-after-printing-adult-website-on-packaging/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/11/mattel-pulls-thousands-of-wicked-dolls-off-shelves-after-printing-adult-website-on-packaging/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 11 Nov 2024 19:23:15 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/11/mattel-pulls-thousands-of-wicked-dolls-off-shelves-after-printing-adult-website-on-packaging/

Still from the film “Wicked”

Source: Universal Studios

Thousands of Mattel’s “Wicked”-branded fashion dolls are flying off shelves, but not because of consumer demand.

The toy company has been forced to pull its line of character dolls after a package misprint. Instead of listing the website for Universal’s “Wicked” movie, boxes featured a link to a pornographic website for a group called Wicked Pictures.

“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” Mattel said in a statement. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”

Target, Walmart and Amazon had removed the line of “Wicked” dolls from their online storefronts as of midday Monday, as had Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and Macy’s. The products were also being sold at Kohl’s and DSW, among other retailers. Some sites were still taking action on the listings throughout the day Monday.

It is unclear if Mattel will reprint the packages or provide retailers with stickers to cover the incorrect website domain. Mattel did not return CNBC’s request for additional comment after providing its initial statement.

“Like any business, mistakes can and do happen in the toy business,” said James Zahn, editor in chief of The Toy Book. “This was likely an innocent oversight that made it through the normal processes. Most consumers — kids and adults alike — will never read the fine print on a package, and at the end of the day, the packaging is designed to end up in the trash. The odds of a kid reading the back of a doll box and being inclined to go online and visit the website are pretty slim.”

The mishap comes as Universal floods retail shelves with “Wicked”-related product ahead of the film’s Nov. 22 release. The green-and-pink barrage is expected to bring a big boost to the retail industry just in time for the crucial holiday period.

However, Mattel could see its revenue impacted by the cost of removing the dolls.

“I suppose the impact depends on the resolution, which we don’t yet know,” said Jaime Katz, an analyst at Morningstar.

“The big winners in the short term are resellers, as this snafu sparked a flipper frenzy this weekend as retail shelves were quickly emptied by opportunists looking to make a quick buck by selling on eBay or Facebook Marketplace,” Zahn noted.

Already dozens of Mattel’s misprinted dolls are available on eBay for list prices ranging between $40 and $2,100. The dolls retailed for between $20 and $40 depending on the character and outfit.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC. NBCUniversal is the distributor of “Wicked.”

Actor Tony Todd, known for his roles in the horror film “Candyman” and its 2021 sequel, died on Wednesday, his representative, Jeffrey Goldberg, told CBS News. He was 69.

“Regretfully, I can confirm that my friend and client of over 30 years, Tony Todd, has passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 11:50 p.m. peacefully at his home in Marina Del Rey,” said Goldberg. “I am lucky to have been able to work with this amazing man and I will miss him every single day.”

Todd’s cause of death was not disclosed.

For four decades, Todd’s roles spanned genres, with film credits that started in 1986, per IMDB. They range from his role in the Academy Award-winning film “Platoon” to “Final Destination.”

Todd is perhaps best known for playing Daniel Robitaille in the 1992 film “Candyman” and its 2021 sequel. Todd’s character was the ghost of a Black artist and the son of a slave who was killed for his relationship with a White woman. The film also starred Virginia Madsen as a graduate student in Chicago who was preparing a thesis on the legend of Candyman.

Todd reprised his role in 2021 in the sequel, which starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen as an artist who gets drawn into the Candyman legend.

Madsen wrote a tribute post to Todd on Instagram, saying, “The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life. More later but I can’t right now. I love you.”

New Line Cinema, which produced the “Final Destination” franchise, also posted on Instagram about Todd’s death.

“The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony,” read the post.

Todd was born on Dec. 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C. He pursued acting at the Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute and Trinity Repertory Conservatory, according to Deadline.

He went on to guest star in popular TV shows and sitcoms from the 1980s and 1990s including “Night Court,” “Matlock” and “Law & Order.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Todd is survived by his wife, Fatima, and two children.

Queen Camilla missed Britain’s annual remembrance weekend events to honor fallen service personnel while she recovers from a chest infection, Buckingham Palace said Saturday.

The wife of King Charles III was due to join the royal family at a “Festival of Remembrance” at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night. The 77-year-old was also scheduled to honor the war dead at the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph war memorial, a major event for Britain’s royals, the next day.

“Following doctors’ guidance to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal chest infection, and to protect others from any potential risk, Her Majesty will not attend this weekend’s Remembrance events,” the statement said, adding that she was greatly disappointed.

Painting the town pink and green: 'Wicked' takes over retail ahead of theatrical debut https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/09/painting-the-town-pink-and-green-wicked-takes-over-retail-ahead-of-theatrical-debut/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/09/painting-the-town-pink-and-green-wicked-takes-over-retail-ahead-of-theatrical-debut/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 09 Nov 2024 13:00:01 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/09/painting-the-town-pink-and-green-wicked-takes-over-retail-ahead-of-theatrical-debut/

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as Elphaba and Glinda in Universal’s “Wicked.”

Universal

“Barbie” painted the town pink in 2023, and now “Wicked” is upping the ante by adding a splash of green.

Universal‘s theatrical retelling of the famed Broadway musical is creating buzz ahead of its Nov. 22 release with hundreds of merchandise offerings from dozens of retail partners. The green-and-pink barrage is part of Universal’s marketing strategy for the film and could bring a welcome boost to the retail industry just in time for the crucial holiday period.

These “Wicked” collaborations cross the spectrum from apparel, accessories, footwear, beauty and costumes all the way to home decor, toys and even one-of-a-kind cars.

The collections range in price points as well, offering consumers affordable and luxury options to show off their love of all things “Wicked.”

Target and Walmart have a slew of products on shelves, with whole sections of the store dedicated to themed shirts, sweaters and footwear, as well as dolls, plush figures, books and nail polish.

Lego and Mattel have brick sets and Barbies tied to the film; Starbucks has a collection of new tumblers and mugs, plus limited-time drinks inspired by main characters Glinda and Elphaba; and Betty Crocker has “mix to reveal” cake mixes that turn pink or green when wet ingredients are added.

Toyota’s Lexus is even releasing two one-of-a-kind versions of its 2024 Lexus TX that have “Wicked”-themed wraps.

The Broadway show on which the film is based is one of the most popular and highest-grossing musicals of all time and already has an established and rabid fanbase.

Just at the Gershwin Theater in New York City, more than 14.5 million people have bought tickets to see the show since it launched in 2003, generating more than $1.67 billion in ticket sales, according to Broadway World. Those figures don’t include traveling national shows or international residencies.

These fans are hungry for merchandise that celebrates and enhances their fandom and they are willing to pay for it, according to Mintel’s 2024 “U.S. Superfans and Enthusiasts Consumer Report.

The report found that nearly half of “superfans,” the most enthusiastic and devoted fans, have spent money on official fandom events or merchandise in the past year. The report, which surveyed 2,000 adults in the U.S., also determined that fandom collaborations and partnered releases are most successful among niche super-fandoms.

And that’s a good thing for the retail space, which saw the consumer confidence index fall 7 points in September, the largest drop in more than three years, only to soar up 11% in October, the biggest single-month acceleration since March 2021.

Retailers that have partnered with Universal are expected to see a boost from sales of “Wicked” merchandise, which could help them stand out from other companies during the next few months.

What could also drive demand is the fact that these merchandise collaborations are limited-time only. Once the stock is gone, it’s not likely to be replenished. So, even the most price-conscious consumers may be willing to spend in order to get these products before they vanish from shelves.

Movie theaters, too, are offering up themed popcorn buckets, drink specials and other merchandise for moviegoers who head out to cinemas to see the film. These retail opportunities could help boost the “Wicked” box office.

At present, box-office analysts have a wide-ranging read on what “Wicked” could do during its domestic opening weekend. On the conservative end is an $85 million haul, predicted by leading entertainment and technology research firm NRG. Meanwhile, others speculate that the first film in a planned duology could top $100 million and capture as much as $150 million during its first three days in theaters.

The divergence of expectations comes as Hollywood has struggled to market and make a profit on movie musicals in recent years. Adaptations such as “In the Heights,” “Dear Evan Hanson” and “Mean Girls,” all based on Broadway shows, failed to drum up significant box-office revenue during their runs.

However, other fan-favorite intellectual property-driven titles — including “Dune: Part Two,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2” — have overperformed estimates. With “Wicked” already being a household name but existing in the musical space, box-office analysts are finding it tricky to predict where it will land.

Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Discovery said Thursday its streaming platform Max added 7.2 million global subscribers in the third quarter.

It marked the biggest quarterly growth for the streaming platform since its inception. Max now had 110.5 million subscribers as of Sept. 30. Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship streaming service has been growing its subscriber base at a fast clip this year since expanding internationally during the first half.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s stock was up more than 10% on Thursday.

The streaming business has become a bright spot for Warner Bros. Discovery as its traditional TV networks have been pressured by cord cutting and a soft advertising market. Last quarter, Warner Bros. Discovery reported a $9.1 billion write-down on its TV networks.

On Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery reported third-quarter results that showed revenue decreased 4% to $9.62 billion compared with the same period last year. Total adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were down 19% to $2.41 billion.

Warner Bros. Discovery swung to a profit of $135 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with a loss of $417 million, or 17 cents per share, in the same period last year.

TV networks revenue rose 3% to $5.01 billion compared with last year, despite declines in both distribution and advertising revenue for the segment. Studios segment revenue dropped 17% to $2.68 billion, with theatrical revenue falling 40%, excluding the impact of foreign currency exchange, due to the lower box-office performances of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Twisters” compared with that of “Barbie” last year.

However, the streaming business’ revenue increased 8% to $2.63 billion, driven by an increase in global subscribers, higher advertising revenue and global average revenue per user. Adjusted EBITDA for the segment was $289 million, a rise of $178 million compared with last year.

Netflix reported 5.1 million subscribers additions during the quarter, propelled by its ad-supported plan and beating Wall Street expectations. In total, Netflix now has 282.7 million memberships.

However, beginning in 2025, Netflix will no longer update investors on its subscriber numbers as it shifts focus toward revenue and other financial metrics as performance indicators.

Comcast’s streaming platform Peacock added 3 million subscribers during its third quarter — spurred by the Summer Olympics in Paris — bringing its total to 36 million as of Sept. 30.

In August, Disney reported that Disney+ Core subscribers — which excludes Disney+ Hotstar in India and other countries in the region — increased by 1% to 118.3 million, despite the company’s earlier guidance that it wouldn’t add new customers during the fiscal third quarter.

Disney’s Hulu saw subscribers increase 2% to 51.1 million. Disney reports its next quarterly earnings on Nov. 14.

Paramount Global’s streaming division swung to an unexpected profit last quarter. Still, its Paramount+ streaming platform dropped 2.8 million subscribers to 68 million as it unwound a Korean partnership deal. Paramount is scheduled to report quarterly earnings Friday.

Disclosure: Comcast owns NBCUniversal, the parent company of CNBC. Comcast is a co-owner of Hulu. NBCUniversal owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics is the U.S. broadcast rights holder to all Summer and Winter Games through 2032.

The beloved show “Yellowstone” is coming to an end with the final episodes beginning Nov. 10 on Paramount Network.

“I just say don’t look away, buckle up. It’s really fast, it’s only six episodes, and a lot happens. It starts high and ends higher,” said actor Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, the youngest child of patriarch John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner.

Grimes called the ending of the show powerful and profound in an interview with “CBS Morning.”

“I think you know anytime you’ve spent a lot of time with a show, you want the ending to sort of wrap everything up in a way that satisfies you and makes you feel like you didn’t waste your time. I feel like that’s what this finale does.”

The show films in Montana, where Grimes and his wife have lived for over four years, creating their new home.

“My wife is from Brazil. I’m from Ohio. There was going to be nowhere that we lived that felt like home to both of us at the same time, so we had to find that and we found that in Montana,” he said.

As the show nears its finale, Grimes said he would describe his experience as “epic.”

“It was just a great group to begin with. It’s a great project,” Grimes said. “It ended up becoming this big huge cultural thing that we were all a part of, and we shot it for seven years in a beautiful place. It was just, all of the elements were there.”

Beyond “Yellowstone,” the actor is a new dad.

“Sleepless, but awesome,” Grimes said about his love for fatherhood with a 6-week-old baby. “He’s changed our lives in a big way.”

Grimes also released his first country album, saying his love for singing parallels his desire to act.

“I think it’s the same reason I like films and television, is stories. I think songs are sort of mini stories, and country music especially, the lyrics really mean something, and they’ve always helped me sort of get through my own life.”

Paramount Network is a subsidiary of Paramount Global, CBS News’ parent company.

Minneapolis musician Tyka Nelson, Prince’s only full sibling, died Monday at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, her son President Nelson confirmed to The Associated Press. She was 64.

A cause of death was not immediately available, and President Nelson said he doesn’t expect to know “for a couple of days.”

In a Facebook post Monday, Prince’s cousin, Charles “Chazz” Smith said his family is “very saddened” by the news.

Born to jazz musician John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw in 1960, two years after Prince, Nelson was a singer-songwriter, releasing four albums across her career, starting with 1988’s “Royal Blue.” That album produced her biggest hits, “Marc Anthony’s Tune,” which spent 11 weeks on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, peaking at No. 33, and “L.O.V.E.,” which spent seven weeks on the chart and topped at No. 52.

It’s an alternative to her brother’s chosen color of purple. Of their relationship, she said: “The funniest thing is people say, ‘How does it feel to be Prince’s sister?’ They don’t actually realize what they’re saying. I’ve been Prince’s sister ever since I got here on Earth.”

The Associated Press described her “Royal Blue” album as “mostly adult-contemporary or easy-listening” material, “far removed from Prince and the so-called Minneapolis sound. Hers is a mature, romantic sound aimed at 25- to 45-year-olds.”

Then came 1992’s “Yellow Moon, Red Sky,” 2008’s “A Brand New Me,” and finally, 2011’s “Hustler.”

Nelson is survived by two sons, President and Sir, and five grandchildren.

“Born 1960, the daughter of Mattie and John Nelson, she was best known as Prince’s sister and worked to keep his legacy alive with his fans attending fan and industry events,” President Nelson shared in a statement. “Services will be private, and in lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you take care of one another.”

Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016 at his home in Minneapolis. He was 57. He had no will, and his six siblings inherited equal interests in the estate: Tyka Nelson and five half-siblings — Sharon Nelson, Norrine Nelson, John R. Nelson, Omarr Baker and Alfred Jackson.

Tyka Nelson, Baker and Jackson, the three youngest, sold their stake to a music publishing company called Primary Wave Music, LLC, which later assigned its interests to an affiliate, Prince OAT Holdings LLC. Jackson has since died.

Representatives for Paisley Park, Prince’s private estate which is also a museum, studio, and concert venue in Chanhassen, Minnesota, did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ request for comment.
