HAMIRPUR: People of Sammoo village in Himachal Pradesh‘s Hamirpur district are not celebrating Diwali, a custom they have been following since many years, fearing the curse of a woman who committed Sati on Diwali day.
Village elders have cautioned the younger lot that celebrations would not bode well and invite misfortune, disaster and deaths. Legend goes that, many years ago, the woman had left for her parents’ home to celebrate Diwali. But soon she got the news that her husband, a soldier in the king’s court, had died. The woman, who was pregnant, could not bear the shock and burnt herself on her husband’s pyre. She cursed the villagers that they will never be able to celebrate Diwali.
Sammoo village, located about 25km from Hamirpur district headquarters falls under Bhoranj panchayat. “Even if the villagers settle outside, the woman’s curse doesn’t leave them.
Some years ago, a family from the village, settled far away, were preparing some dishes for Diwali when their house caught fire. The people of the village only worship Sati,” Bhoranj panchayat pradhan Pooja Devi told PTI.
A village elder, who has witnessed over 70 Diwali days without any celebrations, says whenever someone tries to observe Diwali, some misfortune or loss happens and so the villagers prefer to remain indoors. “For hundreds of years, people have refrained from celebrating Diwali. On the day of Diwali, if a family even by mistake bursts crackers and makes dishes at home, then disaster is sure to happen,” says another villager Veena.

  • On November 1 (Friday), banks will be closed in Tripura, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Manipur due to the celebration of Deepavali, Kut Festival, and Kannada Rajyotsava.
  • On November 2 (Saturday), banks will be closed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh for Diwali (Bali Pratipada)/Balipadyami/Laxmi Puja (Deepawali)/Govardhan Pooja/Vikram Samvant New Year Day.

Some states will see extended bank holidays. In Karnataka and Maharashtra, banks will be closed for four consecutive days from October 31 to November 3 (Sunday). In Uttarakhand and Sikkim, banks will be closed for three consecutive days from November 1 to November 3 (Sunday).

Servings: 20 pcs

Prep Time: 1 hr, Freezing Time: 4-6 hrs

For Gajjar Halwa

Ingredients:

– 500g grated carrots (preferably red)

– 240ml milk

– 200g khoya

– 75g sugar

– 2 tbsp ghee

– ¼ tsp cardamom powder

– 4 tbsp chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)

Method:

1. Sauté carrots in ghee for 5-7 mins.

2. Add milk, cook until thickened.

3. Stir in sugar and khoya; cook to thicken. Add cardamom and nuts. Let cool.

For Ice Cream

Ingredients:

– 250ml whipping cream

– 50g condensed milk

– 1 tsp vanilla essence

Method:

1. Whip cream to soft peaks.

2. Mix condensed milk and vanilla, then fold in cream and halwa.

3. Freeze for 4-6 hours.

For Brandy Snaps

Ingredients:

– 60g flour, golden syrup, brown sugar, butter

– 1 tsp ginger juice

– 1 tsp brandy

Method:

1. Melt syrup, sugar, and butter; add flour, ginger, and brandy.

2. Bake small spoonfuls on a sheet at 175°C for 8-10 mins.

3. Shape snaps around molds while warm.

To Serve: Scoop ice cream into brandy snaps and garnish with mint.

Ingredients:

– 200g desiccated coconut (50g for rolling)

– 100g milk powder

– 150g soft dates, deseeded

– 5g roasted fox nuts (makhana)

– 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil

– 8-10 saffron strands

– A pinch of cardamom powder

Method

1. Blend dates into a paste. Mix with coconut, milk powder, saffron, and cardamom until a dough forms.

2. Grease palms, flatten small dough balls, place a fox nut in the center, and roll into balls.

3. Coat with desiccated coconut. Serve or store.

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 slices of Harvest Gold Hi Fiber Atta bread
  • ¼ cup grated cheese
  • 2-3 cheese slices
  • ¼ cup tomato ketchup
  • ½ cup finely chopped Capsicum

Instructions:

  • Cut the Harvest Gold Hi Fiber Atta bread slices into thin sheets
  • Cut the cheese slices into thin pieces
  • Align the cheese slices on top of the bread slices
  • Roll the bread and insert a stick to create a lollipop-shape
  • Layer it with tomato sauce
  • Add grated cheese and capsicum on top of each lollipop
  • Now air fry the Bread Cheese Lollipop
