As coffee remains one of the world’s most consumed beverages, researchers have been probing its effects on heart health.

A series of recent studies presents mixed findings, suggesting that while moderate coffee intake may offer protective benefits, excessive caffeine consumption could pose risks.

Recent studies shed light on coffee’s potential impact on cardiovascular health, sparking renewed interest and nuanced perspectives.

Moderate coffee intake lowers diabetes, heart disease risk

A study from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that consuming 200–300 mg of caffeine daily—about 2-3 cups of coffee—may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke by up to 48%.

Registered dietitian Melanie Murphy Richter highlighted caffeine’s role in enhancing insulin sensitivity, which supports heart health, while interventional cardiologist Dr. Cheng-Han Chen noted the potential benefits from coffee’s other compounds like flavonoids and polyphenols.

Excessive caffeine linked to increased cardiovascular risk

Another study presented at the ACC Asia 2024 Conference in India linked high caffeine consumption (around 400 mg or four cups of coffee daily) with an elevated risk of hypertension and cardiovascular events. Lead researcher Dr. Nency Kagathara warned that chronic caffeine intake could impact the autonomic nervous system, raising heart disease risks.

Stroke risk varies by beverage and quantity

Research published in the Journal of Stroke found that more than four cups of coffee daily may increase stroke risk by 37%. However, moderate coffee and tea intake (3-4 cups of black tea daily) was associated with a reduced stroke risk, showing regional differences in outcomes.

New study finds no link between coffee and arterial stiffness

A study by Queen Mary University of London reported no significant differences in arterial stiffness between individuals consuming high or low coffee quantities. This suggests that moderate to high coffee intake may not harm vascular health as once feared. Researchers noted that average intake in the study’s high-consumption group was five cups per day, with some participants drinking up to 25 cups.

Experts’ perspectives

Professor Metin Avkiran from the British Heart Foundation emphasized that while coffee’s effects on heart health vary, the recent findings offer reassurance against fears of arterial stiffness from regular coffee intake.

Still, moderation remains key. Dr. Christopher Yi, a vascular surgeon, advised that “moderation is safer than excessiveness” due to coffee’s complex effects.

These findings underscore that while coffee may provide certain health benefits, excessive consumption could negate them, especially for those with existing heart conditions or hypertension. Researchers continue to explore safe caffeine limits to guide health-conscious coffee drinkers.

New Delhi: Consuming more caffeine, present in coffee, tea, and cocoa may improve heart health in people with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study on Wednesday. 

Patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. This is both due to the disease and some treatments for them, particularly cortisone derivatives.

To date, these patients were given conventional recommendations like quitting smoking, reducing cholesterol, and controlling high blood pressure, the new study published in the journal Rheumatology, added drinking caffeine to the list to boost their heart health.

Researchers from Sapienza University of Rome, in Italy, suggested that caffeine, present in coffee, tea, and cocoa, actively helps endothelial progenitor cells, the group of cells that help regenerate the lining of blood vessels and are involved in vascular growth.

“The present study is an attempt to provide patients with information on the possible role of diet in controlling the disease,” said the paper’s lead author, Fulvia Ceccarelli. 

Caffeine not only acts as a stimulant effect on the body but also exerts an anti-inflammatory effect. It is because it binds with the receptors expressed on the surface of immune cells. 

In the study, the team examined 31 lupus patients who did not have traditional cardiovascular risk factors using a seven-day food questionnaire. 

After a week, the patient’s blood was measured to check blood vessels’ health. The result revealed that patients who consumed caffeine had better vascular health, as measured through endothelial cells, which form the important inner layer of blood vessels.

Ceccarelli called for a longitudinal study to confirm the results and assess the real impact of coffee consumption on the disease course.

Apply Stain-X Carpet Stain Remover, Spot Shot Carpet Stain Remover, or Afta Carpet Stain Remover.
Flush the stain with a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid laundry or dishwashing detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
Blot with a clean pad and rinse well with water.
If the stain remains:

Use an enzyme presoak (follow directions on label).
Blot and flush alternately until no more stain is left.
Sponge the area well with water.
Blot all excess liquid and place a clean pad over the area and weight it down.
When no more is being absorbed, allow the area to thoroughly air dry. (If coffee contained cream and any greasy stain remains, follow procedures to Remove Milk and Cream.)
Cotton and Linen
Follow these steps to remove coffee stains from Cotton and Linen:

Blot up excess.
Pretreat (the method of applying a stain-removing agent directly to the stained area before laundering) with Shout Liquid Laundry Stain Remover, then launder immediately.
If that is not possible, soak the stain in a solution of 1 quart warm water and 1/2 teaspoon dishwashing detergent for 15 minutes.
Rinse well with water.
Next, sponge the stain with rubbing alcohol.
Rinse and allow to dry.
If the stain remains, use an enzyme presoak (follow directions on label).
Rinse well with water and dry.
Launder as soon as possible.
Another method that has worked:

Stretch the stained area over a bowl and secure with a rubber band.
Pour boiling water through the stain from a height of 2 to 3 feet. Stand back to avoid splatters.
Although cotton and linen can stand boiling water, some of the finishes and colors used on the fabrics might be damaged by such harsh treatment.

Felt and Fur
Follow these steps to remove coffee stains from Felt, Synthetic Fur and Natural Fur:

Blot up what you can without forcing the stain further into the fibers.
Mix a mild soap in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds.
Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply.
Rinse with a cloth dipped in clear water and wrung nearly dry.

Powder the stain with an absorbent such as cornmeal.
