Reuters exclusively reported that EU antitrust regulators are asking Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) rivals and customers whether they are affected by the U.S. tech giant’s proposals to gain UK approval for its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O). The European Commission had cleared the deal in May after Microsoft agreed to license popular Activision games such as “Call of Duty” to rival game-streaming platforms. That clearance was given before Microsoft proposed the Ubisoft deal to appease the UK regulator.

 —

The end of an era is fast approaching at Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” and the network has announced at least the first phase of plans for what’s to come next.

Following longtime host Trevor Noah’s imminent departure, the network shared this week that comedy legends including Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, D. L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans will fill in as host of the late-night show starting Tuesday, January 17th, as part of its “next chapter”.

Comedy Central added that “Daily Show” correspondents and contributors are also “set to host with additional details to be announced.”

“As we enter Trevor’s final week, we want to thank him for his many contributions,” said Chris McCarthy, president/CEO of Paramount Media Networks, according to the network statement.

Trevor redefined the show, as did Jon Stewart before him, and as we look to the future, we are excited to reimagine it yet again with the help of this incredible list of talent and correspondents along with the immensely talented ‘Daily Show’ team.”

Noah’s final show is set to air this Thursday. The network has yet to announced whether guest hosts will revolve indefinitely or if a permanent, individual host will be named soon.

“The Daily Show” airs weeknights at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central and is available the following morning on Paramount+.

Patrick Warburton reveals his mom hated ‘Family Guy’

Family Guy earned many fans through its satire. But, its star, Patrick Warburton’s mom, Barbara Lord, was not one of them.

Explaining her reason for hatred, the actor, who plays Joe Swanson, told The Mirror, “There is a huge gap with my parents and myself,” adding, “Something like Family Guy, because they’re so deeply religious they would see it as blasphemous and not truly understanding that satire is what it is.”

Ironically, the money the 59-year-old sent to his mother from the proceeds of the Fox sitcom went to a group calling for the series’ cancellation.

“She’s donated money to Parents Television Council, and their biggest fish to fry is to get Family Guy off the air,” he said.

Despite her repeated attempts, Family Guy lasted 22 seasons and became one of the top-hit sitcoms in television history.

Patrick, meanwhile, argued for the “need for satire in society,” noting, “We need to be able to hold up the mirror; we need to be able to laugh.”

“I think that in the realm of comedy, we need to have that immunity in society so that comedians can feel free to take a swing of the bat and it might be a miss, but if we don’t have satire and we don’t have humor, then we’re all at a tremendous loss,” he concluded.

Opposition Rubbishes NDA Budget With "Kursi Bachao" Tag https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/opposition-rubbishes-nda-budget-with-kursi-bachao-tag/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/opposition-rubbishes-nda-budget-with-kursi-bachao-tag/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 23 Sep 2024 05:52:52 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/opposition-rubbishes-nda-budget-with-kursi-bachao-tag/

The first budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term has been received with disdain by the newly-strengthened Opposition. While the Congress has been sharp in its criticism, its INDIA bloc allies have been unanimous that this is a “kursi bachao (save the chair)” budget. The term has been coined by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav concurred. But his grouse lay elsewhere.

“It is understandable that they have to save their government and gave special packages to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, but a state like Uttar Pradesh that gives the country its prime ministers, is there anything for the farmers here?” Mr Yadav told reporters today.

“This is their 11th budget and it is strange that people are still alive. The problems that have been there before — inflation, unemployment (are still there). If we look at Uttar Pradesh, what is the status of investment? They talk about big numbers, but none of their big projects are finished,” he added.

Mr Yadav was also scathing about the government’s big ticket skilling programme in collaboration with the private sector.

“They created unemployment for 10 years. And they hope to solve it now, that too with jobs in bits and pieces. The country’s youth need stable jobs. They are offering a paltry one-year training,” he said.

Ms Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress was scathing. Senior party leader Kalyan Banerjee took a swipe at the special packages for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, calling it “Kursi bachao budget”.

“They have presented the budget for allies which will save their seats. This budget is to keep their NDA partners Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu happy,” he said.

The “Kursi Bachao” epithet was also used by Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress has also alleged that the government’s flagship skilling announcement has been lifted straight its manifesto. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge has called it a “nakalchi (copy-paste)” budget.

“I am glad to know that the Hon’ble FM has read the Congress Manifesto LS 2024 after the election results. I am happy she has virtually adopted the Employment-linked incentive (ELI) outlined on page 30 of the Congress Manifesto… I wish the FM had copied some other ideas in the Congress Manifesto. I shall shortly list the missed opportunities,” posted senior party leader P Chidambaram on X, formerly Twitter.

Trinamool’s Kalyan Banerjee He also pointed out that there has been nothing for Bengal, where the BJP has lost ground. “This budget is not for India. They have not given anything to Bengal. They can’t tolerate Bengalis. The BJP will be wiped out of Bengal,” he added.

Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD leader Rabdi Devi said the Rs 26,000-crore support allocated to Bihar for the development of crucial projects including road connectivity and infrastructure, is a “jhunjhuna” (child’s rattle).

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced huge packages for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, that includes a boost in infrastructure and special financial support.

Janet Jacksons on motherhood
Janet Jacksons on motherhood

Janet Jackson can’t seem to stop gushing over “motherhood”.

“The most important thing I’ve done, the biggest thing I’ve done, is become a mother, and it’s had a beautiful impact on my life,” the 58-year-old Control singer told The Guardian.

Janet, who became a mother at age 51 with her ex-husband Wissam Al Mana and soon separated after the birth of her son, said that she “wanted to have three children, but thought, ‘I should stop there, that’s probably all I can handle.’ Because you have to give all of yourself.”

“Obviously, you have to work, but you don’t come first anymore. Your life completely changes. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” she said.

The Rhythm Nation hitmaker shared similar thoughts about motherhood in another interview, calling it “the most amazing thing she’s ever done.”

“I’m so thankful that God allowed me to experience motherhood, because it didn’t have to be,” she shared with host Judi Love on a recent episode of Loose Women.

“I do a lot of reflection, it’s amazing because kids don’t realize what you go through as a parent or what you have going on the back burner,” Jackson added.

AI could be capable of ‘learning by thinking’, say researchers https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/ai-could-be-capable-of-learning-by-thinking-say-researchers/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/ai-could-be-capable-of-learning-by-thinking-say-researchers/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 23 Sep 2024 05:38:25 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/ai-could-be-capable-of-learning-by-thinking-say-researchers/

NEW DELHI: Artificial intelligence (AI) too could be capable of ‘learning by thinking‘, which is known to be core to a great discovery, according to a review. Cognitive scientists have documented how people learn from observation, in which one acquires knowledge by observing the external world.
However, another way of learning — a relatively neglected one — is ‘learning by thinking’, in which one gains knowledge without input from the external world, such as through thought experiments or self-explanations, according to Tania Lombrozo, a professor of psychology at the Princeton University and the author of the review published in the journal ‘Trends in Cognitive Sciences’.
In a thought experiment, one hypothetically explores a theory or a principle by thinking through its consequences, whereas in learning through self-explanations, one makes a sense of new information by relating it with what they already know.
Albert Einstein and Galileo Galilei are known to have used thought experiments for coming up with the theory of relativity and insights about gravity, respectively.
Lombrozo’s review showed that this process of thinking may not be exclusive to humans and that AI too is capable of correcting itself and arriving at new conclusions through ‘learning by thinking’.
“There are some recent demonstrations of what looks like learning by thinking in AI, particularly in large language models,” Lombrozo said.
In the review, Lambrozo said, when asked to elaborate on a complex topic, AI may correct or refine its initial response based on the explanation it provides.
The author continued that in the gaming industry, simulation engines are used to approximate real-world outcomes, and models can use outputs of these simulations as inputs to learning.
Further, asking a language model to draw analogies can lead it to answer questions more accurately than it would with simple questions, Lambrozo said. A form of AI, a large language model is trained on massive amounts of textual data and can, therefore, respond to users’ requests in the natural language.
Prompting AI to engage in step-by-step reasoning can lead it to answers it would fail to reach with a direct query, the author added.
“Sometimes ChatGPT will correct itself without being explicitly told. That’s similar to what happens when people are engaged in learning by thinking,” Lombrozo said.
In humans, the authors explained that people can acquire knowledge through explanation, simulation, analogy, and reasoning.
Giving examples of ‘learning by thinking’ in humans, Lombrozo said that explaining how a microwave works to a child might reveal gaps in our understanding.
The author explained that in humans, examples of ‘learning by thinking’ can include explaining how a microwave works to a child, during which we might come across gaps in our understanding.
Another example stated was that of rearranging furniture, which often involves picturing different layouts in one’s mind before making physical changes in a room.
The comparison of ‘learning by thinking’ examples in humans and AI “poses the question of why both natural and artificial minds have these characteristics,” according to Lombrozo.
“What function does ‘learning by thinking’ serve? Why is it valuable? I argue that ‘learning by thinking’ is a kind of ‘on-demand learning’,” Lombrozo said.
When one learns something new, they may not know exactly how the information will serve them in the future, and so, will be stashed away in their minds until the context makes it relevant, the author said.
The review also raised questions as to whether AI systems are actually ‘thinking’ or merely mimicking outputs of such processes.

Swiss Pensions: Swiss vote on pensions and environment protections https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/swiss-pensions-swiss-vote-on-pensions-and-environment-protections/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/swiss-pensions-swiss-vote-on-pensions-and-environment-protections/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 23 Sep 2024 05:36:12 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/09/23/swiss-pensions-swiss-vote-on-pensions-and-environment-protections/

GENEVA: Switzerland may be associated with pristine natural landscapes, but environmentalists sounding the alarm over its endangered ecosystems are urging voters to back broader biodiversity protections in a referendum on Sunday.
That proposal appears set to fail, according to opinion polls, while the Swiss are also set to reject a planned reform of the financing of the wealthy Alpine nation’s pension system slammed by unions as a “scam”.
Most people cast their ballots in advance in the popular votes held every couple of months under Switzerland’s direct democratic system and polling stations will only open a few hours Sunday morning.
Early results are expected by mid-afternoon.
The first proposal, entitled “For the future of our nature and our landscape”, has the backing of a number of environmental protection organisations, including Pro Natura and BirdLife.
These warn that Switzerland’s biodiversity “has declined”.
“Switzerland has one of the highest levels of threatened species and environments among the European countries in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation)”, Sarah Pearson Perret, a Pro Natura director, told AFP, citing a report by the European Environmental Agency.
Published in 2020, that study shows that the percentage of protected zones compared to the national territory is lower in Switzerland than anywhere else in Europe.
‘Alarming’
Switzerland’s federal government currently invests around 600 million Swiss francs ($700 million) each year towards the preservation of biodiversity.
But the organisations behind Sunday’s referendum say that is not enough.
While they have not said exactly how much more should be spent, they are asking voters to approve boosting the biodiversity budget and to expand the number of protected areas.
A landmark biodiversity agreement reached in Montreal in 2022 called for at least 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and oceans to be protected by 2030.
But last year, Switzerland’s Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) said just 13.4 per cent of the Alpine country’s territory was dedicated to biodiversity conservation.
The FOEN acknowledges that Swiss biodiversity protection is insufficient, with half of all natural environments and a third of natural spaces threatened.
Aquatic environments and marshes are among the most threatened.
The organisations backing the referendum deem the situation “alarming”, stressing that “the mass extinction of species directly affects us humans”.
Both the government and parliament have come out against the proposal, insisting Switzerland is already doing enough and warning that the measures would severely impact the economy, agriculture, construction and energy production.
‘Scam’
Swiss voters also appeared set Sunday to reject a government-backed reform of pension financing.
Today’s Swiss pensions are split into three so-called pillars: the basic state pension, a compulsory pension fund into which employers and employees must pay and voluntary top-ups into private funds and investments.
According to the government, low financial market returns and rising life expectancy have left the second pillar underfinanced.
Bern’s proposed reform would require employers and workers to raise their pensions contributions into the obligatory occupational funds.
But the unions who demanded the reform be put to a referendum charge that it would force people to contribute more even as they would see their pension payments shrink.
The Swiss Trade Union Federation, an umbrella group of 20 unions, has slammed the reform as a “scam”.

BRASILIA: The Brazilian Supreme Court on Saturday asked Elon Musk-owned social platform X to present documents validating its new legal representative in the country, as the firm’s lawyers now say it will comply with court demands to be allowed to resume operations in Brazil.

X was shut down in Brazil in late August after it did not comply with orders from the top court related to hate speech moderation in the social platform.

But in the last few days, X representatives have started to publicly vocalise intentions to address the court demands, even though the firm had previously said it would not meet them.

X lawyers said late on Friday that the platform had named a legal representative in Brazil, addressing a key demand imposed by the court.

In a Saturday decision, Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes gave five days for X to provide commercial registries and other documents proving that X formally signed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its Brazil legal representative.

Brazilian law requires foreign companies to have a legal representative to operate in the country. The representative would assume the legal responsibilities for the firm locally.

X had a legal representative in Brazil until mid-August, when it decided to close its offices and fire its staff in the country.

The move followed a months-long dispute between Musk and Moraes over the firm’s non-compliance with court orders demanding the platform to take action against the spread of hate speech, which the billionaire denounced as censorship.

Besides the indication of a legal representative, Brazil’s top court also required X to block certain accounts investigated in a hate speech and misinformation probe, and to pay fines amounting over $3 million as conditions to lift the ban.

At first X had said it would not comply with the “illegal” orders, but now its lawyers said the platform will pay the fines it owes, and that it has also started to block the ordered accounts.

It was not immediately clear which were the accounts X has been ordered to block, as the probe is confidential.

Despite the ban, X became accessible to many users in Brazil on Wednesday for a limited period of time after an update to its communications network bypassed the court-ordered block.

U.S. Army Captain Meriwether Lewis, 2nd Lt. William Clark and their Corps of Discovery returned to St. Louis to a hero’s welcome after their epic journey to the Pacific Ocean on this day in history, Sept. 23, 1806.

“We were met by all the village and received a hearty welcome from its inhabitants,” wrote Clark as their expedition returned to the Gateway to the West

“We Suffered the party to fire off their pieces as a salute to the town.”

Their epic continental sojourn, easily covered by air travel today in mere hours, lasted 28 months and covered 8,000 miles of an undulating route largely following the Missouri and Columbia rivers.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1862, ABRAHAM LINCOLN PROCLAIMS SLAVES WILL SOON BE ‘FOREVER FREE’

“What happened to the Corps is a great story, brimming with energy and full of forward motion,” enthused historian James P. Ronda in a 2003 retrospective in Smithsonian Magazine.

“In extraordinary settings, a remarkable cast of characters encountered adversity of epic proportions and struggled through one adventure after another.”

The expedition included about three dozen members.

Among the multicultural band of explorers: Clark’s slave, York, whose skin color shocked natives who had never seen a black person before; celebrated Shoshone native Sacagawea; and her French Canadian-Native American son Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, born on the journey in present-day North Dakota in 1805.

Clark cared for the boy after Sacagawea died in 1812.

Seaman, Clark’s Newfoundland dog, also made the journey.

The expedition took the Corps through what was then the forbidden North American wilderness, unexplored by Europeans, largely unmapped for posterity by humans and inhabited by flora, fauna and native tribes unknown to the outside world.

Among the curiosities they encountered and recorded to the amazement of European Americans were 178 plants, 122 animals — including grizzly bears — and the indigenous Clatsop people in what’s now Oregon, one of many “Flathead” tribes of the Pacific Northwest.

“The most remarkable trait in their physiognomy,” wrote Lewis, “is the peculiar flatness and width of forehead, which they artificially obtain by compressing the head between two boards while in a state of infancy and from which it never afterward perfectly recovers … From the top of the head to the extremity of the nose is one straight line.”

The Corps was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson while he was working to acquire the sprawling Louisiana Territory from France in 1803.

Both Lewis and Clark kept detailed accounts of the journey.

“Even before negotiations with France were finished, Jefferson asked Congress to finance an expedition to survey the lands of the so-called Louisiana Purchase and appointed Lewis as expedition commander,” according to History.com.

THE AMERICAN LEGION TURNS 103: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION FORMED TO AID WWI VETERANS

The Corps of Discovery departed on May 14, 1804, reached the Pacific on Nov. 7, 1805, wintered on the Columbia River near present-day Astoria, Oregon, and began the return journey to St. Louis on March 23, 1806.

Both Lewis and Clark kept detailed accounts of the journey.

They left for posterity a rich repository of insight into the natural landscape, the continent’s native inhabitants and their own daily battles for survival.

Remarkably, all but one member of the expedition, Sgt. Charles Floyd, lived to complete the journey. He died on Aug. 20, 1804, perhaps of a ruptured appendix, upon what’s now known as Floyd’s Bluff on the Missouri River in Sioux City, Iowa.

“Lewis and Clark’s journals record for us not only a story of astonishing personal courage but also a powerful parable of trust within the human community,” writes editor Landon Y. Jones in his 2000 account of their diaries, “The Essential Lewis and Clark.”

“Clark on the other hand is blunter, earthier and more to the point.”

“They continued their mirth with songs and festive jokes and were extremely merry until late at night.”
