Anxiety is a natural response to stress or danger, designed to help us stay alert and focused during challenging situations. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming, or occurs without a clear cause, it can interfere with daily life. Understanding why anxiety happens and learning how to manage it are crucial steps toward maintaining mental health and well-being.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is the body’s reaction to perceived threats, activating the “fight-or-flight” response. This mechanism helps us react quickly in dangerous situations. However, modern-day anxiety often stems from psychological stressors like work pressure, financial worries, or social situations rather than immediate physical threats.

Anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder, occur when this response is triggered excessively or inappropriately. These conditions affect millions of people worldwide and can cause significant distress.

Why Does Anxiety Happen?

1. Biological Factors

The brain’s amygdala, responsible for processing emotions, plays a major role in anxiety. Imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine can also contribute to heightened anxiety.

2. Genetics

A family history of anxiety disorders can increase the likelihood of developing anxiety, suggesting a genetic predisposition.

3. Environmental Triggers

Stressful life events, such as trauma, abuse, or major life changes, can trigger anxiety. Chronic stress, unhealthy relationships, or financial difficulties can also contribute.

4. Lifestyle and Health

Lack of sleep, poor diet, and substance abuse can worsen anxiety symptoms. Physical health conditions like heart disease or thyroid issues may also play a role.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in various ways, including:

Physical Symptoms: Increased heart rate, sweating, shaking, dizziness, or digestive problems.

Emotional Symptoms: Persistent worry, fear, or a sense of impending doom.

Behavioral Symptoms: Avoidance of situations, difficulty concentrating, or irritability.

How to Manage Anxiety

While anxiety can feel overwhelming, it is manageable with the right strategies and support. Here are some effective methods:

1. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, help calm the mind and reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety. Techniques like progressive muscle relaxation can also alleviate tension.

2. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity reduces stress and boosts mood by releasing endorphins.

Eat a Balanced Diet: Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar, which can worsen anxiety.

Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.

3. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety. It equips individuals with tools to reframe their thinking and manage stress.

4. Build a Support System

Sharing feelings with trusted friends, family, or support groups can reduce feelings of isolation and provide comfort.

5. Limit Stressors

Identify triggers and create strategies to manage them. This might include setting boundaries, managing time effectively, or delegating tasks.

6. Consider Professional Help

If anxiety is persistent or severe, seeking therapy or consulting a mental health professional is crucial. In some cases, medication may be recommended.

When to Seek Help

If anxiety significantly impacts daily functioning or leads to symptoms like panic attacks, it’s time to seek professional help. Early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and improve the quality of life.

A slower walking pace could be a sign of cognitive decline or dementia, a new study suggests.

Researchers assessed more than 16,800 healthy people over the age of 65 in the U.S. and Australia during a seven-year period (2010 to 2017), according to the published study in JAMA Network Open.

The investigators measured participants’ walking speed and performed cognitive tests every two years.

ALZHEIMER’S PATIENT, 90, SAYS SKIING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES KEEP HIM MENTALLY SHARP

Those who demonstrated a decrease in walking speed by at least 2 inches per second a year — along with slower cognitive ability had a higher risk of dementia, as compared to individuals considered to be “non-decliners, cognitive-only decliners or gait-only decliners,” according to the report.

“The combination of declining memory and slowing gait seems to be a stronger indicator of future dementia risk than decline in one of those things alone,” Dr. Taya A. Collyer, PhD, who led the study out of Monash University in Australia, told Fox News Digital.

Family members often comment that their loved one had changed prior to a dementia diagnosis, according to Dr. Amy Brodtmann, a neurologist and professor of the Cognitive Health Initiative at Monash University in Australia.

SLEEPY DURING THE DAY? IT COULD BE AN EARLY WARNING SIGN OF DEMENTIA, STUDY SUGGESTS

“There has long been an assumption that a slowdown – of walking, thinking and actions – is a sign not just of aging, but of developing cognitive impairment and dementia,” she told Fox News Digital.

‘Simple to measure’

The researchers suggested that measurement of walking speeds could be a useful tool – combined with other screening measures – to help identify individuals who are at risk of developing dementia and ensure that they receive early testing and preventive interventions.

“We don’t yet have a definitive test for dementia that family doctors can do in their own clinics,” noted Brodtmann, one of the co-authors of the study.

Walking speed is very “simple to measure,” Collyer added.

“Our study also suggests that family doctors might keep an eye on walking speed when they (or their patients) have concerns about dementia,” she said.

DEMENTIA RISK COULD BE HIGHER FOR OLDER ADULTS WHO EXPERIENCE THIS TYPE OF INJURY, STUDY FINDS

The manner in which a person walks, also known as the gait pattern, could help signal a potential issue, according to Edward Farrell, a physical therapist and certified strength specialist at Physical Solutions Physical Therapy and Fitness on Long Island, New York.

“Our gait pattern and speed requires reflexive planning, adjustments to surfaces, and focus and attention, which are often impaired with cognitive diseases,” Farrell, who was not involved with the study, told Fox News Digital.

Other risk factors

Courtney Kloske, PhD, director of scientific engagement for the Alzheimer’s Association in Chicago, Illinois, noted the importance of exploring other factors that may impact risk in diverse populations.

These risk factors include genetics, health conditions such as hypertension, health-related behaviors like physical activity and diet, and environmental elements, such as air pollution.

“Up to 45% of dementia cases could be delayed or prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle factors.”

“While not all factors are modifiable, research shows that up to 45% of dementia cases could be delayed or prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle factors,” Kloske, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital, citing the 2024 Lancet Commission, a collaborative report from leading dementia experts.

The study highlights the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors early and consistently, including helping to prevent or postpone the onset of cognitive decline, according to Kloske.

She recommends adhering to a healthy diet, maintaining a regular exercise routine, controlling diabetes and blood pressure, and staying socially engaged.

Step into health

Working to improve one’s walking stride is also important for overall health, according to Farrell.

“The ability to maintain a more normal gait stimulates our systems, allowing greater mobility, more independence and reduced fall risk,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Regular strength training like squats, step-ups, bridges and leg lifts can keep our foundational muscles strong as we age,” he advised.

“Stretching to keep hamstrings, hip flexors and calf muscles limber allows for more free mobility to walk.”

Performing balance exercises like heel-toe walking, single leg stance drills and Tai chi can also improve stability and confidence with walking, Farrell noted.

For those who plan to start a walking program, it’s best to wear supportive sneakers that provide a stable base and cushioned comfort, the expert added.

When it comes to skincare, some common ingredients in the kitchen can make a world of a difference. One such easily available item is mustard seeds.

These tiny powerhouses of nutrition are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that are not only healthy for your body but can do wonders for your skin as well. Using these seeds in the form of an oil, or grinding and adding them to DIY face packs and scrubs can help you look younger and radiant. Besides this, they can also help with many skin conditions. Know how you can use use mustard seeds for skin to give it a natural glow!

What are mustard seeds?
Mustard seeds are small, round seeds from various mustard plants, such as Brassica nigra (black mustard) and Brassica juncea (Indian mustard). “In traditional and Ayurvedic medicine, these seeds are valued for their medicinal properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, which benefit skin health and overall wellness,” explains dietician Suvarna Sawant. A research paper published in Agricultural and Biological Sciences, states that these have been used as traditional folk medicine as a stimulant, diuretic, and a way to treat a variety of ailments including peritonitis. It is a condition that causes inflammation in the peritoneum and neuralgia, leading to a sharp, shocking pain in the path of a nerve due to irritation or damage, arthritis, chest congestion, back pain and muscle ache.

Benefits of using mustard seeds for skin
These tiny powerhouses of nutrition provide multiple benefits for skin health, largely due to their high fatty acid and antioxidant content:

1. Anti-ageing properties
Packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, these tiny seeds can help you maintain youthful skin and slow down the ageing process. A study, published in the journal Scientific African, states that a deficiency of fatty acids in the skin is associated with skin ageing. These seeds are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which can combat skin ageing by improving hydration, and collagen production, and reducing fine lines. It can be used in the form of an oil which you can use for facial massages.

2. Moisturization and barrier support
The oil extracted from the seeds helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, supporting smooth, hydrated skin. It also helps to prevent dryness and flakiness in your skin. It is a must-add ingredient in both dry and cold weather, and long-term application will help give you supple and soft skin. The seeds are rich in protein (27%) and oil (31%), states a study published in the journal Agricultural and Biological Sciences. It is rich in emollient properties, which is what makes it a natural moisturiser.

3. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
The seeds are packed with compounds that offer potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits for your skin. The oil contains compounds that can soothe inflamed skin, reducing redness and irritation. It can help alleviate skin conditions like eczema. A study published in The Journal of Dermatology lists mustard seed can help reduce inflammation which can help in the treatment of psoriasis. Reduced inflammation means better skin tone and texture. The antioxidants in the seeds, such as vitamin E and phenolic compounds, help to neutralize harmful free radicals that can damage skin cells.

4. Antimicrobial activity
The seeds exhibit antimicrobial properties, which can help in managing minor skin infections and acne. A study published in the journal Cureus analysed the role of Hydrogel, made with mustard seed extracts against pathogens. It was seen that mustard seed extract has potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity against a variety of oral microorganisms. The extracts were proven to take antimicrobial action against a variety of bacteria and fungi. There are various bioactive compounds in the seeds such as Allyl Isothiocyanate (AITC) and Phenolic Compounds, both known for their strong antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

How to use mustard seeds for skin?
There are many ways that the seeds can be used for skincare. Here is how to include it in your regimen.

Oil application: Apply mustard oil directly to the skin as a moisturizer, focusing on areas that need extra hydration. Use in moderation due to its strong potency.
Face mask: Mix ground seeds with honey and yoghurt to form a paste. Apply this as a mask for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Exfoliating scrub: Combine finely ground seeds with carrier oil (like coconut oil) and gently massage onto the skin in circular motions. This can help remove dead skin cells and improve texture.

What to keep in mind while using mustard seeds for skin?
Mustard oil and other products made from these seeds can be potent. Use them sparingly, as excessive use may irritate the skin, especially sensitive skin. Patch-testing is recommended to avoid any allergic reaction. Additionally, avoid use around the eyes, as mustard contains properties that can cause stinging or irritation.

What to combine with mustard seeds and what to avoid?
The seeds work well with honey, yoghurt, and gentle carrier oils (such as coconut or olive oil) to create balanced, nourishing skin treatments.
Avoid combining these seeds with other strong irritants or exfoliants like turmeric and lemon juice, as this can lead to increased skin sensitivity and irritation.

McDonald's pulls espresso drinks from some U.S. menus https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/mcdonalds-pulls-espresso-drinks-from-some-u-s-menus/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/mcdonalds-pulls-espresso-drinks-from-some-u-s-menus/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 19:38:19 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/mcdonalds-pulls-espresso-drinks-from-some-u-s-menus/

McDonald’s customers may have to go elsewhere for now if they have a yen for frothy caffeinated drinks.

Melitta, the maker of the $3,000 machines used at many of McDonald’s U.S. locations, recommended a temporary stop to their use to “proactively ensure safety,” the company said Wednesday in an emailed statement.

“We are investigating the two impacted machines. Our intent is to determine the root cause and provide a remediation plan that allows us to move forward,” Melitta said in the statement.

Melitta informed restaurant owners on Monday that it was investigating a defect in a component that could cause a blast of steam to emit, breaking the piece. It urged McDonald’s to stop using the machines for up to three weeks while it looks into the issue and inspects the machines, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a letter to restaurant owners.

Because the issue impacts a number of espresso-based beverages, hot and cold lattes may not be on the menu in affected locations, the Chicago-based burger chain said.

“We have moved quickly to decommission these machines in McDonald’s restaurants and are staying in contact with our supplier to resolve the issue,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “We are still determining the scope of the impact.”

McDonald’s, which operates more than 14,000 restaurants across the U.S., continues to sell hot and iced brewed coffee, it said. The chain, which sells almost 8 million cups of coffee a day, late last year launched a spinoff eatery dubbed CosMc’s focused on coffee and other specialty drinks.

The issue with its espresso machines is the latest headache for the chain still on the mend following a deadly E. coli outbreak likely linked to slivered onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. The chain is reportedly spending tens of millions of dollars to help U.S. franchises recover from the outbreak that sickened 104 people in 14 states.

Atlas of cells transforms understanding of human body https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/atlas-of-cells-transforms-understanding-of-human-body/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/atlas-of-cells-transforms-understanding-of-human-body/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 16:00:29 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/atlas-of-cells-transforms-understanding-of-human-body/

An ambitious plan to map all 37 trillion cells in the human body is transforming understanding of how our bodies work, scientists report.

The received wisdom said we were built from around 200 types of cell – such as heart muscle or nerve cells.

Instead the Human Cell Atlas project has revealed there are thousands of cell types, with some appearing to be culprits in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and cystic fibrosis.

In a flurry of announcements, the formation of the human skeleton and the early immune system have also been mapped out in detail.

The novel insight is akin to moving from the maps of the 15th Century era of Joan of Arc and Richard III to what the phone in your pocket can load.

The old maps of the body had the equivalent of major roads and significant geography but also areas cartographers labelled unknown or “terra incognita”.

“[Now] it looks more like a Google map, you have a high resolution view and then on top of that you have the Street View that explains what’s going on, and then on top of that you can see the dynamic changes during the day when less cars are flowing or more cars are flowing,” said Dr Aviv Regev, one of the founders who now works at now at Genentech.

She added: “This is essential for us to understand and treat disease, cells are the basic unit of life, if things go wrong, they go wrong with our cells.”

Performing a feat of “human cartography” requires cutting-edge biology and computer science.

The project so far has looked at more than 100 million cells – deeply analysing each individual one – from 10,000 people around the world.

The journal Nature has now published a series of 40 scientific discoveries as researchers work towards creating the first draft of the whole human cell atlas.

“This is a major milestone that marks a great leap in understanding of the human body,” said Dr Sarah Teichmann, from the University of Cambridge and one of the founders of the Human Cell Atlas.

Broad Institute A kaleidoscopic image of the cells of the small intestine ranging from bright reds to deep purples. Broad Institute

The human small intestine

The latest discoveries include a map of the gut all the way from the mouth, down the oesphagus, into the stomach and intestines and out the anus.

Researchers looked at the types of cells, where they were located and how they chatted to the other cells around them.

Out of the 1.6 million cells analysed was a new form, called a gut metaplastic cell. It seems to play a role in exacerbating inflammation in the seven million people that live with inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

“We were able to uncover a pathogenic cell type that may play a role in some chronic conditions and could be a target for [drug] intervention in the future,” said Dr Rasa Elmentaite, who did the research at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

There are more than 3,600 scientists across 100 countries collaborating on the Human Cell Atlas, which is one of the most ambitious projects in biology and has been described as the heir to the Human Genome Project to sequence the human genetic code.

The developing human skeleton where cartilage (blue) acts as a ‘scaffold’ before bone (purple) is formed.

Another discovery showed how the human skeleton forms in the womb in the weeks after conception.

First a scaffold of cartilage, like the wobbly bit on the end of your nose, forms. Then bone cells grow over it. This happens everywhere except for the very top of the skull to give the brain space to grow.

Some of the genetic instructions involved in orchestrating this early developmental process are the same ones implicated in osteoarthritis decades later.

“Ultimately, using this atlas could help us better understand the conditions of both the young and ageing skeleton,” said Dr Ken To, from the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

A similar study looked at the thymus – a small organ involved in training the immune system. Researchers showed this process started much earlier than previously thought suggesting the earliest stages of pregnancy could have an impact on immune function for life.

It also gives ideas for engineering new immune-cell-based therapies in the laboratory for fighting diseases such as a cancer.

Another example of the Human Cell Atlas in action came during the Covid pandemic when the detailed maps of the body allowed scientists to anticipate how the virus would move from tissue to tissue and identified the nose, mouth and eyes as key entry points to the body.

Dr Katrina Gold, from the Wellcome Trust medical research funder, said today’s announcements were a “true milestone for the Human Cell Atlas”.

“When complete, it could transform the ways we diagnose, monitor and treat diseases,” she said.

Anti-aging Skincare Routine For Your 30s And 40s: Essential Tips For Radiant, Youthful Skin https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/anti-aging-skincare-routine-for-your-30s-and-40s-essential-tips-for-radiant-youthful-skin/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/anti-aging-skincare-routine-for-your-30s-and-40s-essential-tips-for-radiant-youthful-skin/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 15:31:00 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/anti-aging-skincare-routine-for-your-30s-and-40s-essential-tips-for-radiant-youthful-skin/

Aging is a natural process, but with the right skincare routine, you can maintain a glowing, youthful complexion well into your 30s, 40s, and beyond. As skin changes over time, incorporating targeted anti-aging practices becomes essential. Here’s a guide to building an effective anti-aging skincare routine that addresses common concerns like fine lines, uneven tone, and loss of firmness.

1. Start with a Gentle Cleanser

Why: In your 30s and 40s, the skin’s natural oils decrease, and a harsh cleanser can strip the skin further, causing dryness and irritation. Using a gentle, hydrating cleanser helps maintain moisture balance, leaving skin soft and ready for the next steps.

What to Use: Look for a sulfate-free, hydrating cleanser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to help retain moisture without over-drying.

2. Incorporate an Antioxidant-Rich Serum

Why: Antioxidants are crucial for combating the free radicals that cause premature aging. Vitamin C is especially effective for brightening the skin, evening out tone, and boosting collagen production.

What to Use: Use a Vitamin C serum or a blend of antioxidants like vitamins E, A, or ferulic acid in the morning. This layer protects the skin from environmental stressors and helps maintain a youthful, radiant glow.

3. Use an Anti-Aging Moisturizer

Why: Moisturizing becomes even more essential as you age, as the skin naturally loses moisture and elasticity. A good moisturizer will not only hydrate but also strengthen the skin barrier, helping it look plump and smooth.

What to Use: Choose a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, peptides, or ceramides. Hyaluronic acid boosts hydration, while peptides can help stimulate collagen production, keeping skin firm and resilient.

4. Include Retinoids in Your Night Routine

Why: Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are among the most researched and proven ingredients for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. They help speed up cell turnover, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin.

What to Use: Begin with an over-the-counter retinol if you’re new to retinoids, and gradually work up to prescription-strength retinoids. Apply it at night as it can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, and always follow with a moisturizer to minimize dryness.

5. Don’t Skip Eye Cream

Why: The skin around the eyes is thin and prone to wrinkles, making it one of the first areas to show signs of aging. An eye cream can hydrate, reduce puffiness, and diminish the appearance of fine lines.

What to Use: Look for an eye cream with peptides, caffeine (for puffiness), and hyaluronic acid for hydration. Using a dedicated eye product helps target the specific needs of this delicate area.

6. Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Why: Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any anti-aging routine. UV rays are one of the biggest culprits of premature aging, leading to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of skin elasticity.

What to Use: Choose a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and make it a part of your morning routine, even on cloudy days. Physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can be gentler on sensitive or aging skin.

7. Exfoliate Regularly (But Not Too Often)

Why: Regular exfoliation can remove dead skin cells, revealing a brighter and smoother complexion. However, as the skin ages, it becomes more sensitive, so gentle exfoliation is key.

What to Use: Use a mild chemical exfoliant (like glycolic or lactic acid) once or twice a week. Avoid harsh physical scrubs, which can be too abrasive and lead to irritation.

8. Add a Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid

Why: As collagen production slows, skin tends to look less plump. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts moisture, giving skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.

What to Use: Apply a few drops of hyaluronic acid serum morning and evening before your moisturizer. It will help lock in moisture and enhance the effects of other skincare products.

9. Consider a Night Cream with Collagen-Boosting Ingredients

Why: Night is when your skin naturally repairs itself, so this is the ideal time to apply ingredients that help boost collagen production, such as peptides and niacinamide.

What to Use: Choose a rich night cream with collagen-boosting ingredients, which will help restore elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

10. Stay Consistent and Patient

Why: Skincare is a long-term commitment, especially for anti-aging. Results from these ingredients and practices take time but can yield impressive, lasting effects.

What to Remember: Stick to a routine, and be patient. Most anti-aging products take a few weeks to show visible results, so consistency is key for achieving and maintaining youthful, radiant skin.

Bonus Tips for Anti-Aging

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated from the inside out.

Diet: A balanced diet rich in antioxidants (found in berries, leafy greens, and nuts) supports healthy skin.

Sleep Well: Quality sleep helps skin regenerate and maintain its elasticity.

Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol: These can contribute to early signs of aging.

By following this anti-aging skincare routine in your 30s and 40s, you can address common skin concerns effectively and maintain a vibrant complexion. Embracing a dedicated skincare routine that includes targeted treatments will not only protect your skin from future damage but also help it look youthful and radiant for years to come.

Air Pollution Worsens Eye Health: Experts Warn Of Rising Cases Of Dry Eyes And Irritation https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/air-pollution-worsens-eye-health-experts-warn-of-rising-cases-of-dry-eyes-and-irritation/ https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/air-pollution-worsens-eye-health-experts-warn-of-rising-cases-of-dry-eyes-and-irritation/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 15:24:00 +0000 https://thenewshub.in/2024/11/20/air-pollution-worsens-eye-health-experts-warn-of-rising-cases-of-dry-eyes-and-irritation/

New Delhi: Even as the national capital continues to battle poor air quality, experts on Wednesday said that the toxic pollutants are raising dry eyes, irritations, and allergies in the eyes of children and adults.

On Wednesday morning, Delhi’s air quality remained in the “severe” category with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) at 427 at 10 am, making it the most polluted city in India, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

“Pollution poses a serious threat to our eyes, particularly to the conjunctiva and the cornea, which is the first point of contact with harmful particles in the air. The fine particulate matter, allergens, and toxins in polluted environments can irritate the ocular surface and make it highly susceptible to infections,” Dr. Rohit Saxena, professor of ophthalmology, R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS New Delhi, told IANS.

“This is especially of concern in children and adults already experiencing dry eyes or allergic reactions, as these conditions worsen with exposure to poor air quality,” he added.

On Wednesday morning, about 12 out of 38 air quality monitoring stations in Delhi reported an AQI of 450 or above. Environment Minister Gopal Rai has directed the Delhi government to grant half of the staff to work from home.

A recent study by researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus showed that people living in areas with increased exposure to PM10 can be twice more at risk of suffering eye infections.

The study showed that clinical visits by patients suffering ocular surface eye conditions — that affect the eye surface, including the cornea, conjunctiva, and eyelids — more than doubled when ambient particulate matter from air pollution was in the atmosphere.

Air pollution can significantly affect eye health causing discomfort and irritation. The polluted air carries suspended particles, dust, and pollutants which can irritate the eyes.

Saxena noted that frequent eye rubbing of the irritated eyes can weaken the cornea over time and lead to conditions like keratoconus — an eye condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape, which can lead to vision loss.

Common symptoms include itching, watering, burning, redness, and a general feeling of soreness.

“In severe cases, air pollution may lead to pain or blurred vision, requiring immediate medical attention,” Dr. Smriti Goel, Consultant – Eye Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, told IANS.

The doctor suggested avoiding over-the-counter medications other than lubricating eye drops unless prescribed by a doctor.

“Use lubricating drops to maintain moisture, and apply cold compresses to relieve irritation. Wear protective glasses or sunglasses to shield your eyes from dust and pollutants. For allergy-prone individuals, anti-allergic eye drops and timely treatment are essential. These measures can help safeguard your eyes from pollution-related issues,” Goel said.

Pollution isn’t just a respiratory issue — it has harmful effects on the entire body including on the ocular health, the experts said recommending people to limit outdoor exposure during peak periods of pollution.

Adviser to Governor New York Dr Ijaz Ahmad has stressed on different communities to ensure the protection of people with special needs and provide them equal opportunities for employment.

In an event held in Nassau County, Dr Ijaz highlighted the plight of those who were left jobless during COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “The pandemic is over but not the sufferings of those who have faced soaring unemployment during that time.”

Referring to a fresh survey, he said that about one in five adults in the city is currently facing some kind of disability.

According to US Census Bureau, there were almost 8,27,000 people with disabilities ranging between the ages of 16-64 in 2022.

It represents approximately 6.7% of the working-age population of the state. The data revealed by the New York State Comptroller is even more shocking. It shows that between 2020-2022, the number of working-age persons with disabilities grew 14.4% in New York and 10.9% across the United States of America.

However, this year, the governor has proposed increasing the number of state workforce positions designated under Civil Service Law for persons with disabilities from 1,200 to 1,700.

The member of the Advisory Council said: “Societies are uplifted when all the people join hands in supporting each other.”

Pakistani-American cardiologist Dr Ijaz is a member of the State Advisory Council that provides guidance to the Justice Center in the development of policies and regulations.

Early this year, Governor Kathy Hochal appointed Dr Ijaz as the first Pakistani-American to serve Justice Center Advisory Council. He was duly confirmed by the New York State Senate in June.

The fifteen-member council is appointed for three-year terms. Other members include William T Gettman (Albany County), Veronica Crawford (Saratoga County), Norwig Debye-Saxinger (New York County), Jason Hershberger (Kings County), Walter J Joseph (Dutchess County), Ronald S. Lehrer (Ulster County), Glenn Liebman (Albany County), Joseph Macbeth (Albany County),

Thomas McAlvanah (Westchester County), Judith A. O’Rourke (Erie County), Harvey B Rosenthal (Washington County), Mary K St Mark (Bronx County), Jeffrey Savoy (New York County), Euphemia Strauchn (New York County), Michael Agovino (Bronx County), Kathleen Gaffney-Bbb (Onondaga County), Geno DeCondo (Oneida County) and Winifred Schiff (Brooklyn County).

As far as Dr Ijaz is concerned, he is also the founding chairman of American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee. Similar to AIPAC, this bipartisan organisation holds fundraising from councilmembers to the presidential candidates. The basic aim of APPAC is to create support system for Pakistani and Muslim Americans to run for political offices across America.

He has recently visited Pakistan along with New York State Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos. During interactions with Pakistani authorities, the delegation had discussed ways to increase trade between Pakistan and the State of New York, curriculum exchange between the schools and open avenues for Pakistani nurses to work in the Empire State.
