Kerala's NH-66 Expansion Nears Completion Amid Structural Integrity Review

The ambitious six-laning project along National Highway 66 in Kerala has entered its concluding phase, with 492 kilometers now operational for traffic. This critical infrastructure enhancement, which traverses the state's densely populated and economically vital coastal corridor, represents a significant milestone in regional connectivity. However, the project's advancement has been tempered by emerging structural concerns. State authorities have acknowledged the occurrence of defects at specific locations during construction, prompting immediate intervention. In response to Kerala's formal request, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has mobilized a comprehensive technical audit. Ten specialized agencies have been commissioned to conduct expert inspections across 17 identified stretches. The review protocol mandates a thorough examination of each Reinforced Soil Wall's design and construction integrity. Based on these assessments, the NHAI will implement necessary corrective measures, which may include structural strengthening, design modifications, selective demolition, or the construction of viaducts in areas deemed vulnerable.
