Government Reports Decisive Gains Against Left-Wing Extremism: 88% Reduction in Violence, 7,400 Arrests Since 2019

In a comprehensive briefing to the Lok Sabha, the Government of India has disclosed significant progress in its campaign against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), marking a substantial shift in the security landscape. According to data presented by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, LWE-related violence has plummeted by 88% since 2010, a statistic underscoring the efficacy of sustained counter-insurgency operations. The report highlights the arrest of approximately 7,400 Maoist cadres since 2019, reflecting intensified law enforcement actions. Geographically, the containment strategy has yielded remarkable results: the number of LWE-affected districts has been drastically reduced from 126 in 2018 to a mere eight as of December 2025, with only three districts now classified as severely impacted. Concurrently, police stations reporting LWE incidents have declined from 465 in 2010 to 119 in 2025, indicating a shrinking operational footprint for extremist groups.
