Exclusive: Karimpuzha Sanctuary Survey Reveals Cryptic Biodiversity, Including Previously Unrecorded Species
A recent intensive faunal survey conducted in the Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary from January 22-25 has yielded significant findings, underscoring the region's ecological richness. The comprehensive assessment documented 171 avian species, 177 butterfly species, and 42 odonate species. Notably, several of these species were recorded within the sanctuary boundaries for the first time, indicating potential undocumented biodiversity or recent range expansions. This discovery highlights the sanctuary's critical role as a conservation stronghold within the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. The presence of previously unrecorded species suggests that the area's complex microhabitats and forest ecosystems may harbor further cryptic diversity awaiting documentation. These findings are vital for informing adaptive management strategies and strengthening conservation frameworks to protect this unique assemblage of fauna. The data provides a crucial baseline for monitoring ecological health and assessing the impacts of environmental change on sensitive species populations.
