NATIONAL MILK DAY 2024: National Milk Day is celebrated on November 26 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien who is known as the ‘Father of the White Revolution in India.’
Dr Kurien dedicated his life to empowering marginal farmers in the dairy industry and made India the world’s largest producer of milk. The special day highlights the achievement and importance of the dairy sector in our country. It also aims to raise awareness of the nutritional benefits of milk and to promote the milk industry in India.

National Milk Day 2024: Theme
This year’s National Milk Day, themed “Transforming Dairying with AI and IT”, is scheduled for November 26, 2024. The event will recognize the achievements of dairy champions and their vital role in shaping the dairy sector. The prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards will also be presented on this day.

National Milk Day 2024: History
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Indian Dairy Association (IDA), and 22 state-level milk federations decided to celebrate Dr Verghese Kurien’s birth anniversary as National Milk Day on November 26, 2014. Dr Kurien led the world’s extensive agricultural program Operation Flood in India which earned him the title of the Father of the White Revolution.
Dr Kurien’s contribution made India become the largest milk producer in 1998 surpassing the US. He established 30 institutions managed by farmers and workers and helped organise the Delhi Milk Scheme to correct the prices levied. He is known for establishing the brand Amul and industrialising dairy production. For his achievements, he received India’s highest civilian awards, namely the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
National Milk Day 2024: Significance
National Milk Day aims to encourage the citizens involved in dairy production and take active steps towards uplifting the mechanism and rearing methods. On the occasion of National Milk Day, the National Gopal Ratna Awards are presented to the winners of the Best Dairy Farmer rearing Indigenous cattle/buffalo breeds, Best Artificial Insemination Technician and Best Dairy Cooperative Society (DCS)/ Milk Producer Company/ Dairy Farmer Producer Organization in the country.
