The year 2024 proved to be an extraordinary one for the Indian film industry in terms of box office collections, but it wasn’t as impressive for Bollywood. Unlike 2023, when four films crossed the 500-crore mark, in 2024, only one film achieved that milestone.

Regional cinema maintained its stronghold at the Indian box office this year. The biggest film of the year, “Pushpa 2 – The Rule”, earned an astonishing ₹1403 crore. The Hindi dubbed version of the film also performed remarkably well, grossing over ₹900 crore. This Telugu blockbuster was a landmark for Indian cinema.

The second-highest grosser of the year, “Kalki 2898 AD”, earned ₹776 crore. This futuristic, mythological film, one of the largest-budget projects in Telugu cinema, stood out as a major success.

For Bollywood, 2024 was a weaker year, but “Stree 2” stunned everyone by earning ₹740.28 crore, becoming not only the biggest Bollywood film of the year but also marking a significant milestone in the horror-comedy genre.

Two major Diwali releases, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” and “Singham Again”, performed well at the box office, grossing ₹334.67 crore and ₹316.45 crore, respectively. Ajay Devgn, who starred in “Singham Again”, was the only actor in 2024 to have two films in the top 15 list.

Tamil cinema had two major hits this year. “The Greatest of All Time” earned ₹305 crore, while “Amaran” grossed ₹258 crore. The Malayalam film “Manjumal Boys”, with ₹170 crore, was a remarkable success and a rare achievement for Malayalam cinema.

Two Hollywood films also made it to the list. “Deadpool and Wolverine” earned ₹153 crore, while “Mufasa: The Lion King” made ₹146 crore and is still running in some theatres.
