Anna Sawai reveals who she’d vote for after Golden Globes ‘Shogun’ win

Japanese actress Anna Sawai claimed the top spot at the 2025 Golden Globes for her role in the series, Shōgun.

Accepting the award, Sawai revealed, “I have so much people to thank but I’m gonna keep it short, thank you to the voters for voting for me even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day.”

She made a point to express her gratitude towards the series’ writers, adding, “Thank you to our incredible writers, without a good script, it’s impossible to give a performance to our fullest, full potential. Thank you. Everyone else – I’m gonna thank you later.”

Sawai’s well-deserved win marked the repeating of history, as previously Yoko Shimada claimed the award for the same role 44 years earlier.

Both actresses portrayed the character of Lady Mariko, wife to the samurai Buntaro. She works as an interpreter between Protestant Englishman John Blackthorne and Japanese Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

Shimada brought Lady Mariko to life in 1980, and passed away at the age of 69 in 2022.

Anna Sawai’s win was far from the only one for Shōgun, as they took home four awards overall.

The actor behind Lord Toranaga, Hiroyuki Sanada snagged the top spot in the Best Actor in a Television Series category.

Additionally, Tadanobu Asano who portrayed the antagonist, won Best Supporting Actor.
