MUMBAI/LUCKNOW: Backing the call for a uniform civil code in India, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath quoted on Sunday a recent statement by Allahabad HC judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav at an event in Mumbai to assert that “majority sentiments are respected globally”.
Speaking at a the World Hindu Economic Forum-2024 event in Mumbai, the CM attacked the Congress-headed opposition, saying that by the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code the difference between majority and minority communities needs to end.
After Justice Yadav’s comments at a VHP event in Prayagraj, SC has sought a detailed report from Allahabad HC. Meanwhile, 55 opposition MPs have submitted a notice to the RS secretary general seeking the removal of Justice Yadav for his remarks. The notice says the judge’s speech “prima facie showed that he targeted minorities and displayed bias and prejudice against them”.
Yogi accused the opposition of hypocrisy, stating they filed a motion against the V-P. “They carry the Constitution with them, but have no shame. These are the people who strangle the Constitution.”
