Barry Keoghan debuts scar ‘that shaped him inside and out’

Barry Keoghan is opening up about a rarely-seen scar on his left arm.

The actor, 32, recently posed for a cover shoot for Hunger Magazine, opening the conversation around “the scars that have shaped him – inside and out.”

The cover picture showed him with a bracelet featuring his mother’s name “Debbie” on one hand and a scar on the other.

“On one wrist you’ve got my mum’s name and then on the other wrist you’ve got this constant reminder, this scar,” explained Barry, whose mother Debbie died from a heroin overdose when he was 12.

“I won’t go into how I got this scar, but I’ve got a scar that’s like a millimetre away from my main vein on my left arm.”

He then got candid about why it finally seemed like the “right” time to “lay it bare.”

“I waited to do this with [photographer Rankin] to show that. You know, it just felt right,” he explained after mentioning that it does get him “emotional.”

“[Rankin and I] both looked at each other and went, ‘Wow! That’s it.'”

Barry also developed a scar that runs the whole length of his arm after he fell ill with a horrific flesh-eating bug which almost led to him having his arm amputated.

The actor was struck down with necrotising fasciitis, which is a rare and life-threatening condition that can occur if a wound gets infected.

Barry was hospitalised with the illness in 2022 just before starting filming The Banshees of Inisherin. The original wound was caused when he was hit with a bottle in a pub.

Keoghan shot to fame recently with his appearance in his popstar girlfriend Sabrina Carperter’s music video for Please, Please, Please.

The Saltburn star shares a two-year-old son, Brando, with his ex-girlfriend Alyson Kierans, whom he split from in mid-2023.
