International Day of the Girl Child: History

At the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the first time in history. This plan was the most progressive blueprint ever proposed for advancing the rights of not only women but girls. The Beijing Declaration is the first to precisely call out girls’ rights, according to the United Nations.

Later, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 and declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child on December 19, 2011. The day brings attention to the need to address the challenges girls face around the world and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

In 2012, the inaugural International Day of the Girl Child was commemorated to emphasise the need to stop child marriages.

If girls are supported and educated effectively, they have the potential to change the world and turn into mentors, household heads, entrepreneurs, political leaders and mothers in the future.

This day is dedicated to raising awareness about this power of girls and promising them a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the issues of climate change, disease prevention, political conflict, economic growth and global sustainability, said the United Nations.
